Mega Issue with Instrument cluster
Hi Guys,
My name is Tony, I live in Romford Essex, UK, and I am a newbie to this forum. I have a 2000 RHD X308 4.0 LWB.
Great car and I have lovingly kept up all the necessary repairs.
My garage noticed that the right hand indicator repeater lamp was not working during its MoT ( Annual fitness test). Unfortunately as most of you will know it is not a simple matter of changing a bulb, the lamp is actually an LED driven by an Integrated Circuit and cannot be done by your average auto electrician.
With time pushing on I removed the Cluster and took it to a specialist cluster repairers. They promised a 1-3 day turnaround. However, on the clusters return I refitted the cluster and that's where my grief starts. Not only does the repeater not work - it now displays a myriad of electronic faults on the LED Display.
The repairers are extremely unhelpful and accusing me of doing something to the instrument panel. Faults Displayed are:
Wrong Item fitted
Low Brake Fluid
Engine fault mode
Gearbox fault
ASC not available
rev counter not working
I have established that the repair company changed what they believe is a Driver for these two LEDs
Previous history - in a addition to the repeater not working the headlight warning lamp stopped working some time ago. I acquired a number of binacles and got exactly the same results.
Any Help Welcome as I have no idea what to do next
I have done a hard reset (Remove Negative battery lead and ground the positive lead).

Hi Tony,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! I'm sorry to hear you are having such difficulties with your Jag.
My initial impression is that you have a problem with the CAN, or Controller Area Network, one of the principle communication buses used by the Engine Control Module (ECM), Transmission Control Module (TCM), ABS/Traction Control Module (ABS/TCM), Vehicle Speed Interface Module, Gear Selector Illumination Module, the Data Link Connector (DLC, or OBDII port), and the Instrument Cluster (IC) itself. This could be due to a problem with an electrical connector or the wiring between one or more modules, or a problem inside the IC. For a diagram of the circuit, see pdf page 146 of the Electrical Guide, which you can download here, courtesy of our member Gus:
Jaguar X308 Electrical Guide 2000
The Low Brake Fluid warning is interesting because the brake fluid reservoir fluid level sensor does not connect to the CAN, it connects directly to the ABS/TCM. So this may be a clue that the problem is between the ABS/TCM and the rest of the CAN. The vehicle speed signal also comes from the ABS/TCM via CAN, and without it the ECM and TCM cannot orchestrate smooth gear shifts.
It seems highly likely that with your symptoms one or more network-related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) have been triggered. Network codes begin with the letter U (for Undefined), and can only be read by diagnostic systems capable of interpreting proprietary Jaguar codes, such as the dealer-level WDS/IDS/SDD, or high-end third-party systems such as Autoenginuity with the Jaguar enhancement module. If any of these U codes are flagged, they may lead to a faster diagnosis of the cause of the malfunctions. I would suggest you find a good local independent shop with knowledge of Jaguars and the capability of reading U codes (and also C or Chassis codes, which include those related to the ABS/TCM).
I don't have the model year 2000 Network DTC Summaries, buy you can download the manual for the electronically-similar 2003 XK8/X103 at this link:

Please keep us informed!
Cheers,
Don
