There is a great tutorial out there (Xk8 forum), plus about four or five really good threads that discuss lots of issues with doing the secondaries: removing dip stick tube, taking pressure off camshaft, etc. Just secondaries is really easy after you read the procedures over and over and memorize them. Doing the primaries is maybe way too hard for an apartment parking lot.

Will these eBay parts work? Or should I seek better quality parts?

Ordered all OEM gaskets and the tool set already.

RSpi - have you pulled the timing cover before spending any more money?

Can you give me the engine number? it's stamped on a stiffening rib cast into the side of the engine block along with bearing codes - it should look like a date backwards....e.g. MB0109161430. It may need to be viewed from underneath the car. There's a number of items attached to the engine that can make a noise on startup, VVT being one.

No I have not pulled the covers.

I'll go look for it. Which side of the engine should it be on?

looking at the front of the car it's on the right hand side. A picture always helps, this is a late model AJ27S engine and yours being an 03 should have the bearing codes above and the engine birth date below in the same place.
