Default Missfire all cylinders on bank 1 - where to start?

Once again I am sitting in a field of leather accompanied by the soft orange glow Mr. MIL

2001 XJ3.2 executive LWB

Code reader returns:

P0172 System too rich bank 1
P0174 System too lean bank 2
P0300 Random/multiple cylinder misfires detected

P0301 ~ P0304 Misfires on all 4 cylinders
P1316 Misfire rate catalyst damage A bank (1) which refers to code P1313

P1313: Cylinder compression low
Worn camshaft / broken valve spring(s)
Fuel delivery pressure (low / high)
Fuel injector(s) blocked / leaking
Fuel injector(s) continuously open
Fuel contamination
Fuel injector circuit fault(s) (Injector DTCs
also flagged)
Spark plug failure / fouled / incorrect gap
ECM to ignition module primary circuit
fault(s) (Cylinder misfire detected DTC
also flagged)
Ignition module ground circuit open
circuit, high resistance
Ignition module / coil failure

Before I jump in and start swapping coil packs about and getting everything mixed up, what should I check first?

I've got a good tool kit and multimeter.

Any help really appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick.

You have the list but I would suggest there are really only two issues that will affect one bank only: Bad O2 sensor and exhaust cam timing.

A guess is that the ECM is trying to drive the throttle body lean to compensate for the Bank 1 rich condition which might explain the Bank 2 lean code.

I would start with pulling the bank 1 valve cover to check for cam alignment and tensioner condition. While there replace the tensioners if they are plastic. I don't know about the 3.2L engine but on the 4.0L the alignment is correct if the cam flats are almost in align but tilted to the center slightly. If found out of align it would be best to not start the engine again as you have jumped one sprocket tooth and survived. Jump another one and destroy the engine.

Let us know.

. . . and welcome to the forum!

Welcome Nick, I agree with test point. He's not being dramatic when he advises not to start the engine until you've confirmed the timing is correct. The codes point to a mechanical issue, a legacy of incorrect timing. A 2001 will have steel liners, but plastic timing parts. If they haven't been changed, now is the time.

What was the car doing when you got these codes? How old is your battery?

The engine light appeared shortly after I bought it and occasionally flashes and restricts the performance. The battery looks in good order and I haven't had and power issues when starting.

I'm not familiar with the 3.2, but I'd also look at the wiring diagram to determine whether any necessary signals, for example coil power/ground, injector ground, etc., is common among banks but separated between banks - an intermittent connection here could cause similar symptoms.

I'd look for an exhaust leak first somewhere between the head and an the o2 sensor. Also I wouldn't rule out a bad/ clogged cat.

Default right bank dead- various codes

My 4.0 v/8 had a tensioner failure and subsequently chain jumped a cog. Ran like crap and right bank had cold exhaust and a little noise under the valve cover.
Removed the cover and the exhaust cam was off by 1 link. The plastic foot on the tensioner was totally gone. I bought the kit from Christopher parts and changed secondary chains and tensioners in one day. Runs like new now. I made my own cam lock and chain tesioner tools. The kit had chains with a master link which made it easy.
