Motor swap - 98 xj8-l
Hello All,
Ok so far- I have replaced the A drum once and the entire transmission once. pulled out the transmission twice and now I have to replace the motor.
Driving down the street and booooooom!!!! clank clank clank- Piston Rod came through the oil pan- No warning what so ever. Yes tentiontioners were replaced etc. So I cant wait to tear down and see what the hell happen. Anyway.... My questions is to you fne folks..... Can I swap with an 03 to an 98 without having to do anything else? I know the cams solenoids /maf and throtle body are different. Would I need to swap ecu ? Any info will help.. and or a place to source a motor locally - California Bay area- Please help a fellow Jag lover...
Cheers!
Rafael.

Welcome Rafael, we'd like to know more of you if you would, please introduce yourself and your car in the New Members Forum ....https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...-intro-must-5/
Its too bad you had to come here with this situation. I know there will be some other help, but you have the AJ26 engine and that's an AJ27 which I believe the VVT is different. Give your post a bit, I'm sure a couple of folks with better knowledge will chime in for specifics. I know there's been posts on this, so in the meantime you may want to use the Search and see what comes back.

Research is key to the engine swap, plenty of reading on here.
Items you'll need to switch over to the 03 unit...
Timing cover and cam covers for VVT
Possible cam swap for the cam position sensor reluctor, or swap reluctor.
Starter ring gear or flex plate - this has timing slots specific to 26/27 and crank position sensor.
Throttle body
ECU stays in the car, no swap required.
I would suggest a full gasket/seal set, hoses and check everything.
Keep the 03 pulleys, new belt.

Pulled a complete 2002 motor from the yard.
Thanks fellas for the info-
So over the weekend- I found a 2002 xj8 in the local yard. I pulled valve covers off was happy to see metals with clean stains (bright metal) vs brownish metals. Metal tensioners and guides are metal. I hand cranked and checked compression. valve clearance decent. Used a plastic straw in cyl - brought up to tdc then right before down stroke - stopped and used a long screwdriver capped with a rubber stub and pushed downward - no movement- no movement - so im hoping no rod knocks and bearings in decent shape. So I pulled the damn thing out. threw it in the back of our minivan ! lol - the wife wasnt to happy-
The block is on stand- awaiting gasket kit including rear main seal.
will start to pull out the blown motor this weekend.
My goal is to gather as much info with you fine folks before I get started.
So I far -
I did grab the ecu and the flex plate with the donar motor - I know the segment shape and spacing are a bit different -

So do I just pull and drop in ?

But my 1998 has the older style throttle body and the 2002 motor has the updated throttle body - so leave the 1998 ecu in the car? The 1998 ecu will be able to read inputs/outputs of the new motor-2002? Or vice versa? well, I guess I can try dropping in either one - hopefully, this kitty cat will purr really soon. Thanks Man.

You really need to swap the 1998 bank 2 intake camshaft into the 2002 engine before you install it into the car. You have to swap timing and valve covers anyways. Since you're replacing the rear main seal and flywheel, be sure to either reseal or replace the seal above the rear main. That's a notorious leaking non moving seal. It's a 17mm Allen wrench you'll need to remove the plug.

I had left the country for a while now and finally back home. Sounds like you have done this before and really I need reassurance on what I really need to do.
I am in a time crunch and need to this asap.
I have both motors out. Original 1998 XJ8-L AJ26 and Used Motor 2002 Vandenplas AJ27.
With the threads here I am a little confused.
I am willing to venmo some beer money or help / walk through? text messages / calls- etc-
Id like to drop in the AJ27 in the 98 and if so how to make compatible wire harness- pin swaps etc - ecu - etc.
If not possible
Then detail list /steps on how to turn the aj27 into an aj26 then drop in.
What is best when it comes to time?

Here's a site to bookmark... JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource ...you'll find many detail layouts for review.
Here's a pdf from that link with some comparisons... http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Trai...ual-9-5-01.pdf
...especially pg 36 for the CMPS, you'll have to scroll through to compare other items.
