Mounting GPS on the windscreen - power

Has anyone mounted a GPS unit on the windscreen and buried the wires?
I like a mounting right under the rear view mirror and a bit on the driver's side. That would make a nice neat installation if one could bury the power cord, which is unsightly now - draping down from the unit, past the radio and shifter and into the rear seat. Yuk.
I do have a radar detector just above the dash on the wind screen that also drapes and I'd like to bury, and don't know if I can do it without taking off the dash.
Back to the GPS: I took the overhead console cover off, and looked for 12v that switches off with the ignition, but no luck. A word of caution here: The GPS unit CORD takes a 12v input, but runs it through electronics to get something less for voltage, so don't wire this direct if you try it at home.
Again, has anyone done this successfully?
Thanks for the reply in advance.

I was given a USB power socket intended for a motorcycle, it was about the same size as a standard 12v power socket, so I decided to fit it in the glovebox as per the Jaguar option. Followed the instructions on Jagrepair.com, but could not find the wires they showed. As I do not have the rear cigar lighter I taped into that under the armrest bin.
