turned it off and now it won't start. I got the restricted performance message. No check engine light. Does this message trigger a protection circuit that needs to be reset by the dealer? If I get an OBD 2 tester will it probably show a code? I realize this situation could be the end of the car. Very depressing ! Regards.....

The AJ27 engine has no overtemp protection.
I saw a customer's X308 so overheated that the KNOCK SENSORS melted into little plastic puddles. The driver was 'almost there' so they kept driving just a little more.
The engine was destroyed and the car now sits in my collection of 'parts-cars'. (anyone need a W5A580?)

Must be nearly a thousand threads on overheating in these cars: READ. Including blown hoses. If you are going to own and drive these, you need to understand what happens to old cars that the owner doesn't baby.
And, if you go up and reread -- between the lines --Bob's first response: you will have likely blown a head gasket and will probably need to rework or replace your engine. But first, replace the hose and refill and see if it runs . . . or tow it to a dealer or really good indy. . .
Mobile one: TOO TRUE, it only reads to the half way until you overheat and then it reads, too hot and too late! Known problem for nearly twenty years. please SEARCH and READ

I don't believe blowen hose can cause restricted performance. I had 3 blowen hoses and transmission cooler leak and high temperature engine and didn't show restricted performance.
Get obd code reader and start from there . It might be the something in the fuel system or in the ignition system . But also there might be severe damage inside the engine because of the high temperature . I think if there's melted parts then the engine is in bad condition
