You're the one with the 170* thermostat ... so spill the beans .. brand, part number and source?

Eurotoys has them in the US, but I do not know their source.

In the event you have a major coolant loss,
Thanks White XKR...it has been losing a little coolant for years!! No-one seems to be able to track it down (the leak/loss) but if it is going internally then all it will get is a can of Chemi Weld. So far it is 1/2 litre missing from the header tank now and again. I usually only drive it short distances now as I don't trust this car to make it there and back.It cycles through evry warning there is particularly Engine Failsafe Mode which comes on at random. No Jaguar Dealers/mechanics within 300 kilometres!!

Looking around at the implied cross references, it seems that a thermostat fitting just about any Audi, BMW 3 series, or Volvo 240 is a physical fit. The reason they might not show readily is that they might not want to show a thermostat with a different temperature rating than OEM.

For the Audi, ask for a S4/A4 thermostat. BMW 325 or M3.

If you take one over and do a comparison ... please let us know your findings

As Rob said, I offer a loan of an OBDII scanner to any customer to perform the 10 minute calibration when they order RealGauge.
Steve, any thoughts of offering the Real Gauge for the X/S Type vehicle lines?

Just curious...

Yes, I hope to at some point, but I do not have a firm schedule yet.

They have a different instrument cluster design and will require a somewhat different approach. I do own an S-type, so I at least have easy access to do the required research and testing.

Sean, if you have RealGauge, you could just recalibrate your temp gauge to be in the middle at whatever your normal running temp is.

Actually Sean has a beta unit (he was the first XJ installation) which did not support calibration in its software like they do now.

It depends on which vehicle it is. Some are cooler, some are even hotter. The VW VR-6 engine line is promising because they tend to run hot. But, generally just about every Audi/VW vehicle uses the same design of thermostat. Maybe the local VW tuner has a low temp thermostat in stock.

The way this came to light was using amazon.com. There is always a "see all vehicles this part fits" link on every auto part. That was when the Jaguar thermostat popped up as also fitting Audi, etc. Then, you dig those vehicles directly and find even more cross references.
Eventually, you get the drift of what fits physically, and only varies by temperature and whether the jiggle pin exists. Some also have a bypass notch -- which is a good thing. Watch out for a few tall ones which will not fit into the thermostat housing.

The factory Waxstat number is even used as a direct fit on some other vehicles.

the only question i have with the RealGauge is the audible alarm. disable? leave intact?
i agree that it's a great feature, since most of us (i.e., my wife) won't visually scan/monitor the temp guage EVER. i guess i'll have to print "how to silence /disengage the audible alarm using
the button on the turn signal stalk" and put it in the user manual folder for future use, cuz she (possibly ME) won't remember it a year later. otherwise, it's roll-the-dice and clip that red wire.

Pushing in and holding the turn signal stalk button for 1.5 seconds will silence the alarm. It should not be too hard to remember, but a note in the glovebox cannot hurt.

The alarm is also silenced automatically when the ignition is turned off.

Default Just Bought RealGauge

My RealGauge arrived in the mail a few days ago (FAST shipping!)
Now, I'm waiting on the Right Time to tackle it, as my wife
drives the Jag to work (small town, i can go fetch the Jag and
hopefully have it back to her parking space by closing time.)

Your thread gives me courage. I, too, am a bit intimidated by
the taps, but I'm just gonna take a deep breath and do it.

Not to be critical of The Company, but how can they sell a
$57,000 car, with a fake gauge? why not just put an idiot light?
i know why-- because they know we don't LIKE idiot lights.
so we get an Idiot Fake Gauge instead!!!

anyway, I'm VERY glad this forum has guys like Steve who can
remedy the problem so perfectly. Best hundred-something I
ever spent, IMHO.

I have it build in by my mechanic ,it works great ,only the temp needle sits a bit higher than it used too when the engine is warm
about one and later two taps from 185 when i drove it back home , so i think i need to do the calibration ......i have a OBD reader .

{I just read that its prob the original thermostat that sets the normal running temp at 200+ and sets the needle about 2 taps higher than 185 ,is this correct?}

You are within the normal running temperature range for the car. You can confirm the accuracy with your OBDII reader.

Normally only the 96-99 cars require calibration, but if you do have a discrepancy let me know and I will send you the calibration cable and variable resistor to perform the calibration at no charge. It only takes about 10 minutes to complete and you only need to do it once.

Thanks TireFriar!

I had just shipped the last of the previous lot a couple of days ago, but I have a new build that will be ready to ship by this Saturday. Free Priority Mail shipping in the US (a flat $10 elsewhere) during the holiday sale.

Steve
