Default Need new longblock, ventilated mine, what years are the same as 2002 XJR

Chain of events:
After sending out my injectors to be cleaned, it appears that one of them got cracked, filled a cylinder with fuel, and caused a hydro lock. I had changed the oil after 1000 miles and used a strong magnet to check for any shavings in the oil from any bearing etc. but did not find any. We thought that if any damage did occur, it would likely show up soon like this, and it did.

So for now, I'm going to take the easy route and find a good low mileage stock engine to drop in place. It is looking like I'll not have to spend more than about $2000-$2500, so the cost is not that bad, all things considered.

My question is what years is the wiring, etc. all the same so I can keep the swap as simple as possible? My car is a 2002 XJR, build date of August.

Is it easiest to pull the engine and trans as one unit, swap engine stuff, then drop it back in as one unit?

My hope is that I can simply unhook the wiring harness, fuel lines, exhaust, intake, trans stuff, then pull the engine and trans as one unit.

On a separate note, I may take this opportunity the build a wicked strong bottom end that could handle much more boost than a stock one

It sounds like a rod rattling around. I'll know if it was the same cylinder as the hydro lock when I pull the engine.

I'm going to wait to pull the engine until I have the other one ready to start going in the same day.

I'm not too worried about it, as it may end up setting me on the path of building a separate completely built motor (heads, strong bottom end, 23lbs+ TS) to swap in later. I'm an inventor, so I tend to take these things as opportunities for upgrades

Good time to replace hard to get to hoses, motor mounts etc while you are at it. (Maybe throw in a tranny rebuild while it is out?)

That's some bad luck.

So nows the time to put a 4.2L in, much stronger bottom end than the 4.0L.

+1 Cambo- if you can, throw in a 4.2.

Sounds like a good idea. If I go this route, it would be a full build, heads, cams, etc, etc. so why not pick up the extra .2 liters.

p.s. It could be good luck too, depending on how it all turns out

You may want to reconsider the 4.2 engine. Your car is a 2002 with a 4.0 engine, the last year Jaguar used that engine was 2003 & it was a short model run. My point is it may be hard to find a good used low mileage engine. If you go with a 4.2 you will have to swap a few parts over but it is not a big deal. Just my 2 cents from someone who was in a similar situation.

But if I wanted to keep it as simple as possible for the moment, I could use a 2002 or 2003 engine??

Any suggestions of where to get one? A 2002 or 2003 4.0

I've been having discussions with my wife and am more or less decided on doing the simplest thing with the jag right now, then buy a 310+ RWHP Lotus Elise as my fastest car/fun toy for the track. With the Lotus, I could spend more time on the track. My Jag, though a good street car for the money, isn't as well situated to spend time on the track.

LOTUS, lots of trouble usually serious.

put a 4.2 in if you can, you'll need either a very late 4.0 or the option of a 4.2 built up to 05, so more possibility to locate.

Your bottom end is exactly the same as the 4.2, the crank is stroked - only additional oil jets to stop the compression loss at startup.

Could I use the engine from a 2000 XJR?

There is one available really cheap right now.

You can, but it's most likely a nicasil motor. I'm not a big fan of nicasil but if that doesn't bother you, then go for it. I'd build out the 4.2 for the TS.

Yeah, the 4.2 is the way to go.

I'll start looking
