Continental Conti Extreme Contact - see http://tinyurl.com/e2xn - have served me well; not the most grippy at the limit, but perfectly adequate for street use, excellent in rain, wear well, and much less expensive than many competitors.

Conti Extreme Contacts are the worst tire I've ever driven on, bar none. Hate them, hate them, hate them - everything about them. They're almost gone, and I can't wait to replace them.
BFGoodrich g-Force Sports are likely what I'll run next. Had em before on other cars and liked them a lot, and in the 255/40/18 size they are one of the cheapest tires available with some semblance of performance.

The sidewalls are the stiffness of a sheet of paper and give no feedback and terrible response. They're noisy. They don't grip. I live in coastal CA and couldn't care less about rain/snow performance. The thin sidewalls mean they don't protect as well against potholes and such. Not to mention, they're $230/tire for the privilege of driving on a terrible tire. The BFG g-Force Sport is a much better tire and I think it's only around $180ish in the same size. There's a $200+ savings right there and a better tire to boot.
I absolutely loved my PilotSport2's I had on the 540i, but I can't afford to keep buying those. Way out of my league unfortunately. But, if you can afford the $350/tire, those were AMAZING tires.
