Default New Owner, Audio Wiring Question

Hi,

So picked up my 2000 XJR today. Radio was dead, previous owner suspected a fuse. This has the premium sound (Alpine option)

Checked fuses, all OK.

Remove radio, find nothing but manage to get the radio to work. Then notice that someone or something has butchered one of the cables which I presume to be the CD shuttle, perhaps to add in aux in but I dont see wires cut. I can see wires going to where the phone could be in the console but nothing is there (apart from wires)

So, when you connect the radio without the 'din' plug (round plug) at the back, radio comes on, allows channel searching etc, no sound.

Something is clearly wrong with the shuttle wiring - but why no sound? Should I get at least FM?

I will likely be swapping it all our for newer kit but Id like to get the OEM stuff to work so that when I sell the car its all original.

Also - found a black plug near the rear, not connected to anything - no obviously place for it to go, does anyone know what it is for?

Also - what is the easiest method to get cables (signal) from the front of the car through under the backseat and through to the boot (trunk) for an amplifier? The seats do not fold down however there is wiring by the kickboard fuses boxes ..... I presume there must be some conduit or similar going rear? I need to avoid power however otherwise I will get interference on the wires.

Thanks in advance.

Just confirming, the CD changer is the Alpine ai-net cable, just behind your little finger in the pic. HAve you got any pics of this 'hacking'?

As for that black plug in your hand... that looks more like a plug for the aircon, rather than the stereo? Although I can't confirm for certain.

Does the back of the unit look like this?

Yep. exactly the same.

Aircon is working fine - did notice after that I seem to have lost some illumination on the aircon panel. I dont think anything was pulled out, really odd.

Is this not something todo with the carphone?

No pics of the hacking - Ive looked again, I dont think anyone tried to solder to it - just looks like someone removed the sheathing and messed around with it (the AI - Net cable).

Ok, the black plug is for the top buttons, how it got disconnected, I dont know.

Been getting some info here:-

2000 XJR Radio / Wiring Question

Thanks for the reponses thus far. Seems that there is a problem either with the amp or the plug going into the amp, so looking to bypass now.

The Audio Amps do fail.
I bought a 2001 XJ8 with Premium Sound with NO SOUND.
I had a customer car in my shop with Premium Sound so I installed MY AMP into the car. NO SOUND!!!!!!!!!!

I installed the customer amp into MY CAR. SOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It takes a few minutes to swap plugs to determine the problem.
If you don't have a spare unit to swap then it will take more time diagnosing.
(sometimes swapping parts saves time)

A salvage yard had a good used part for under $100 with shipping so I bought it for my car.

Make sure all the connectors are in the right places if you have NAV, CD and Premium sound.

And now I have no tailights - dont think ive done anything silly but people were flashing me on the motorway. Car passed MOT (test) last week, so they must have been working. I need to check - also seem not to have the ability to dim interior dash lights and no lighting on the window buttons (I assume it should have, only had the car 3 days).

Sounds like a fuse issue? There are 3 in the car I believe, two under the heel boards under the back seat, and another in the boot

Ye, first place to look. Ive earthed my amp near the left rear tail-light. Technically it shouldnt affect anything but will check.

Its sorted (well, I know whats wrong). Wire off the indicator stalk, common issue, a thin green wire comes lose - poor soldering.
