A new warning message
After learning more than I ever wanted to know about XJ8 cooling systems, a new problem appeared when I started the car to test the cooling system. A red warning light appeared on the dash with the message "Restricted Performance". There was also a strong smell of oil and what seemed to be an abnormnal amount of smoke coming from around the valve covers. I checked the oil level and it was fine. The only thing I can think of is that I might have accidentally cracked the plastic hose that runs between the right valve cover and the air intake when I changed the air filter.
I also noticed that the cruise control light does not illumninate - which may be related to the restricted performance.
Is a cracked hose possibly my problem, or is there something potentially more serious looming?

RE: A new warning message
Sounds more like the brake switch is bad if your cruise switch is not lighting up. That will set the restricted performance light.
Best thing is to scan it for codes and let us know.
Where is the oil leaking onto the exhaust? From the cam covers? If so it is normal, but they do need changed. Replace the breather hose if you cracked it. It will make it run like *** if it is leaking.
Does the light clear out when you cycle the ignition? If not, disconnect battery for 5 minutes and see if light is out. Does it only come back on when you press the brake? Are your brake lights stuck on? Do your brake lights work when you push the pedal?
Check it all out and get the codes read. Let us know.

RE: A new warning message
My wife had to drive the car a short distance today to pick my daughter up from the bus stop. She said that the car ran fine, and there were no warning messages. I had started the car but not driven it since the cooling system repair. I followed her home and the brake lights work fine. I smell burning oil from the leaking valve cover gaskets and a faint odor of coolant - which I figure was sprayed on the engine block from the river I had going about a month ago. I saw some pooled near the back of the engine on top in an area I couldn't reach to to dry it off. There isn't a drop of coolant on the driveway.
One possible cause for the warning light: During the time the car sat while I was waiting for parts, tools and so forth (and trying to find time on the weekends to work on it), the battery went dead. I had to jump start it to check the cooling system repairs. I know that low voltage causes a number of fault warnings on these cars, so hopefully I am past this without further repairs. If not, I know where to turn for answers.
This has to be the best car forum on the internet.

Yep, battery can do it. However, if it comes on again...the light, try to get it scanned without shutting it off. Sometimes it will clear the code.
The coolant smell will dissipate in a few days. Just got to burn off the residual coolant. Not to worry.
I agree....the best forum on the net.
