Default New wheels? Opinions and info about spacers needed.

I saw the XJ below with wheels that I like. Those are Stern ST-11's, I also found the Stern ST-5's that I like.

I found a set on ebay and the seller says that they will fix my XJR but I may need spacers to clear the hubs.

Here is what he said -
"It fit on your car but you need have 5mm to 8mm spacer to bring out your wheels because your car hub bore is longer then normal car otherwise the wheel center cap won't go on the wheels."

Here is the ebay listing 18" Stern St 5 Hyper Silver BMW Chevrolet Blazer S10 GMC Jaguar XK8 XKR Pontiac | eBay

I have never used spacers on wheels before and don't know if it is a good idea or not. Any info or opinions about spacers and how these wheels would look on my XJR is appreciated.

Why not either:

a.) Grind the centre of the wheel at a machine shop
so it fits
b.) go for 5x108 bolt pattern and the wheels will fit.

The spacers will look relatively normal on the front
wheels, but I've had friends fit spacers and they don;t
look proper to me...

plus in the case of the X308's tapering rear quarters, the
wheels will look very unusual from behind.

a.) Its not the wheel that is the problem, the hub on the car is too long and it won't allow the center cap to be installed.
b.) I can get them in the proper bolt pattern, that is not the reason for the spacers, it is the length of the hub that necessitates the spacer.

@ianclements

X308s are on the old GM 5x120.65 (5x4.75") pattern (which is slightly different than BMW / new Chevy 5x120 pattern), shared with such cars as Camaros, Corvettes, and older mid size GM trucks/SUVs. The XJ didn't go to the 5x108 Ford mid-size pattern until 2004 with the X350 generation.

@Vector

As I wrote to ianclements, the Jag uses a 5x120.65 pattern. 5x120 wheels will work, but you have to be VERY careful to put them on properly, or they will not center, and there have been instances of lugs breaking from the slight strain placed on them by the slight difference in pattern (as since the lug pattern is slightly larger than the wheel pattern, it slightly splays the lugs under tension). Some people in the Camaro community have run BMW 5x120 wheels with no problems for years, others have broken lugs after a few weeks. Just something to keep in mind. And you will need new lug nuts, as the Jags use cannon lugs and most everything else in the world uses tapered acorn nuts. The Jag does use both a long and large diameter center hub. They are larger diameter than about anything else, as most American stuff uses a 72.6mm wheel center bore (larger than most anything from Japan or Germany), but Jaguar uses an even larger 73.4mm. So for other wheels that don't come with an unusually large center bore (most aftermarket wheels are 72.6mm) like those, you'll have to have them machined out slightly (I had mine bored to 74mm at a machine shop for $25 a wheel). Like he said, they also have a long hub past the exterior rotor face, so it can interfere with the cap on certain wheels. So a spacer can help with that. But another concern is the offset on those wheels. They have a pretty aggressive offset at a +13. As a point of comparison, the 2000-2003 XJR "Asteroid" wheel has a +32 offset and is 8", meaning the exterior face of the wheel rim is further towards the center of the car on the Asteroids. So these new wheels would be about 1" closer to your fender lip on the front (.25" from the extra width and .75" from the extra offset), and about 1.5" closer on the rear. There is some room to move out, but you're already chewing up a lot of that space with the extra offset, so you may not have space to run even a thin spacer without having to roll/grind your fender lips so you don't cut the tire. You are almost certainly going to have to roll/grind your rear lips, as that is a VERY aggressive fitment on the back. That being said, if you have space, there is basically no problem with running a thin spacer. Anything 10mm or less is basically no problem. It's not enough extra to really add any significant stress to the lugs or hub. About the only thing it will really effect is your scrub radius on the front, so steering effort may go up a tiny bit, but Jags are a little overboosted anyway, so that may actually be an improvement.

So in summary:
1. The 5x120.00 pattern on those wheels will work, but isn't quite right for your 5x120.65 Jag and may present small issues.
2. The offset on those wheels is kind of aggressive on the front, and VERY aggressive on the rear, so you're probably getting fairly close to your fender lips with those wheels, so you may need to roll/grind the fender lips to run them, although it will give you a great aggressive stance.
3. The center bore on these wheels is big enough, but for other people, make sure you have at least a 74mm center bore or you'll have to machine them.
4. You'll need taper lug nuts unless these wheels are already set up for cannon lugs, and if you're running 5x120 wheels, your cannon lugs may not work due to the pattern difference.

So all in all, these will probably work, just be aware of these issues.

Hey guys,
I was wondering if you can give me your idea, I was thinking of placing wheel spacers on my 2000 Jaguar XJ8L. A few months ago I put new brembo slotted and drilled brakes with new pads, new touring (all seasons tire 225/60R16) front and back. The jaguar has stock suspension and stock rims but I was thinking of placing wheel spacers but I'm not sure if it will look good. The reason why I would do it is to beef out the tires a little bit give it a wider tire look to it.
If so what type of wheel adapter do I get and I know theres different types of thickness that the spacers come as?

ok, here is my story

I changed from 5X120 Asteroids to 5X108 Chrome Senta staggered 20inch

bolt pattern of course different , I put 1.25 thick adapter with patten conversion,it works perfect fine. but when it comes to the rear. 1.25 was just too thick and rubbing the wheel arch. I also have to changed to 20mm thick but gotta cut the original lug stud by like an half inch or one CM in order to sink in a thinner 20mm flatten

also, the bore-hub is 74mm that I specially order made that

what drives me nuts is find the correct lug nuts. the car has 0.5X20 thread while the adapters I order come with 12.5
