Default Newbie- please treat me with kid gloves!!!

Good evening all. I fell into a purchase of a Jag! never wanted one but could not pass up a deal! SO I have a 2000 XJ8-L and she has an issue..restricted performance and some engine codes: P01316, P0353, P0300, P0302. P0302 and P02306-all ignition related. The problem is intermittent as it comes and goes. As an american mechanic I would suspect an ignition control module. Bu being unfamiliar with an English car I thought i would ask the forum for assistance. First is my suspicion correct-an ICM? and if so where the heck is it? I love the car it rides like a dream and I just want to get it running right for weekend cruises.

bobm2004, I've moved your post from the X350/358 section to the XJ (X308) section which is appropriate for your model year. I'm sure one of the fellow XJ owners will be along shorty to advise

In the meantime, check out the stickies at the top of this section and you will find the DTC code list.

Also - as this is your first post, please stop by the New Member section and post an intro - in return, you will receive a warm welcome and some useful tips for forum navigation.

Hi bobm2004,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us, and congratulations on your new Jag.

The most frequent cause of what we often call the "Christmas Tree" of codes is a weak battery or low battery voltage while cranking, so the first thing I'd recommend is to test your voltage at the battery terminals while cranking. If the battery voltage remains above 12V while cranking, check at the starter motor to see if you've got a voltage drop somewhere. A common cause is corrosion on the battery power cable connections and ground points throughout the car. Most chain auto parts stores will run a basic check on your battery and charging system for free, but bear in mind that Jaguars require stronger batteries than most cars, and a battery that measures "Good" at AutoZone or O'Reilly may be sagging under load and triggering phantom DTCs.

Since more than one ignition coil is involved, another possibility might be the coil relay, which is in the engine bay on the right side of the firewall (viewed from the driver's seat).

You can download lots of service reference materials from the 'HOW TO' quick links thread on the home page of this X308 forum, and you can download the 2000 XJ8 Electrical Guide here:

I'm sure other members will have some additional suggestions.

And since we're a friendly group, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can give you a proper welcome and learn something about you and your Jag.

Cheers,

Don

I agree with DonB. A new properly sized battery solved all my 'mystery' problems. I also use a Celtech ? battery tender and I have had no problems since.

Thanks for the replies. As request new to the forum post has been added. I will check the battery ( a nice tip thank you), however I do not think that the problem as the issue of restricted performance indication and the motor seeming to be missing on cylinders is irregular and not at start up. She bucks pretty hard at 50, and jumps when you try to get it moving from zero. And there are times she starts and runs good no problem and then other times the restricted performance comes and goes. I changed all the plugs and inspected the coils packs, which looked okay. The link to the the electrical system manual has helped a lot. There is no ignition control module, its part of the main controller with the ignition relay. Thanks so much for the help and please anyother suggestions are welcome!

www.jaguarrepair.com has a wealth of information. Auto Enginuity OBD2 reader works well if you have the jag enhancement for SRS and Jag specific items. Any reader should
help with the drive train issues you are experiencing.

Battery issues, corroded ground connections etc cause may more issues than you would think. Doing a hard reset of the computer will fix 1/2 of the problems.

Disconnect the battery cables from the battery and touch them together to discharge
the capacitor and then reconnect.

Look for the obvious simple things that need to be fixed anyway.

Ebay and the forum have the factory manuals and JTIS. I now this is all very general, but it gives you where to find the information.

Well team, I did get the battery checked out. It was 6 years old. It tested as unstable. It was an 850 CCA rated battery. So I replaced it with a new 900 CCA battery. As I drove away from the battery store the restricted performance indicator went away and Beast ran great.....for about 20 minutes. Then the restricted performance came back. Continuing to search for answers. The motor in restricted performance mode is definitely the engine is running on 5 cylinders. Ignition relay?

Codes Now?
The original codes were a little misleading in that they reported a problem with firing in cylinders 2 and 3. There is no ignition module, per se; the ECU fires amps integral to each coil on the AJ27 engine. I would check plugs, swap coil two with coil four, then three with another and see where the codes lead me.
