Hello all,
I think that I have to get my post count to a certain number before I can access all the sticky information if I read the new person info correctly, is that the case?
Until then, I am considering an XJR supercharged and want to know any information regarding known issues/problems with such an animal. One of the cars I'm considering is a 2000 with @ 85,000 miles on it.
Does this MY have issues that were taken care of in later years? etc.etc.
Any information appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Dan

like most cars, the later the better as developments mature. Earlier cars certainly had issues, these have either been addressed or can manifest themselves at any point and will need doing.
1. nikasil - if a set of good compressions - no problems
2. water pump - 98' cars had a faulty one, later fixed by Jaguar
3. plastic timing chain parts - fixed on cars produced after mid Aug 2001 - earlier and they've either been replaced or need to be asap.

Dan,
I just bought a 2000/2001 XJR and did a bit of background before buying. As noted above the Nikasil lining, timing chain tensioner, and water pump plus throttle body issues were items that many referred to - often with conflicting info.
There is some great stuff on this forum which I have already put to good use. I'd also say that this is the most welcoming XJ8 forum I've used so far, with top level layout and support. I did struggle to find a comprehensive buyer's guide though.
The best overview that I came across was from a Buyer's Guide post in Pistonheads which you might want to search for - it is very well written in my view.
I am not au fait with the correct protocol for linking to other forums - but firmly believe that we are all willingly sharing in a free environment with a view to mutual assistance. Moderator may correct me on this one.
From a purely emotional perspective - do not delay, get out and get an XJR before it's too late. I love mine (honeymoon love - only time will tell).
When I see the car on the drive I feel good; when I slide into the cockpit I feel cossetted; when I cruise along sedately I am awash with a warm sense of well being; and when I get on it I can count on two physical responses - a big grin and my sphincter tightening. These cars are amazing, and provide some great sensations for not much money.
Happy Motoring!

Don't worry about nikasil that much. They had a problem in early years because of high sulfur fuel, long gone. It is still important to allow the engine to warm up before shutting off to prevent cylinder wash due to raw fuel removing the oil from the rings, resulting in no compression, no start. But it's bad practice to shut any engine down cold.
A nikasil engine with good compression is probably better, as it's a low friction, hard surface. I have read on the forums that it's still in use on Ferrari and Porsche engines.
