Nicasil engine
Hi all, I bought a 2000 jaguar xj8 vanderplas. This car has the R engine. When I start it from cold, It starts first time BUT blows out a smoke screen of blue smoke. This last's for 5 or 6 minutes or untill the engine warms up. When I open the oil filler cap, I get the blow by vapour coming out. I took the car to the dealer who said it was a nicaseal engine and that I would have to replace the engine with a new one at a cost of $14000,00 Canadian. Please could someone who has been in a simular situation let me know what would be my best way to solve this problem. Many thanks.Hilton.

RE: Nicasil engine
There is a "load breather tube" (I believe it is called) on the valve cover driver side..that could be plugged.....bit tricky to remove hose...if that is plugged and you clear using a small drill bit (2 0r 3 /32 ) it may alleviate seemingly blow by....if you can ....sell the car....if you keep be ready for expensive bills on replacing engine...if you replace engine as you may like the car a lot see if you can have a 2001-2003 engine with steel liners...
eurotoys does this conversion and they know how to install and required mods for a 2001-03 engine to go in there..even then ..a recycled engine is a gamble..
whish I could tell you more or better news....a compression test and leak down and blow by is a sure way to know....but be informed before going any further....car is just not inexpensive...
also check for a plastic waterpump and faulty thermostat..while these are not expensive they can cause the engine to overheat and really make a mess....
then the tensioners . you have a car that is best bought with steel liners and a factory .warranty
I have a 1999...am going through it all...reliability has not been the best thus far on engine issues,....
Happy Thanksgiving....

If you are lucky and your breather tube was clogged and you get to reduce blow by that way you may getn to run a few years as it should I am guessing...don't know how many miles you have now so just a guess..
but here is the link to a remanufactured engine for information anyways...btw...I am not a mechanic...just a victim like you....just telling what I know..not much....http://www.britishparts.com/jaguar-d...ines-reman.htm
hope this helps...

RE: Nicasil engine
check the part load breather....... but unfortunately your engine is probably nearing toast. I've been through the exact same thing with my 98 XJR - same symptoms. Do you have a bunch of oil blowing in your air intake from the part load breather?? if so, not a good sign.
One thing that you can do is dump a can of RESTORE into the oil (or put a few tea spoons directly into the cylinders). Most miracles-in-a-can are BS, but this actually gives you back some of your lost compression.
