Nikasil... what now?

Ok guys; I got a hell of a deal (so I thought) on a '99 XJR, immaculate, 90k. It burns oil on startup, misfires according to the OBD (intermittently), and has a positive VIN match for the "Nikasil Years." I got such a hell of a good deal on the car ($5,800) that I hate to just part it out or flip it. So my question is what are my options? I've read a lot in the forum about this issue, but didn't see much in the way of resolution. Rebuild or Replace, Repair or Part-Out, any advice is welcome! What are the costs involved? What are peoples outcomes?

Sorry to say, but that's not much of a deal anymore, these cars have dropped in price like hotcakes. All cars are dropping, but I bought my car in Feburary only for it to drop more than $2k in 4 months. My car is a 98 just hitting 80K miles. It is in pretty good shape all around, but I see these now (98-00 usually) for around $5500-$6000 with less miles than that, even around the midwest. You won't really find a 98-99 that doesn't need tensioner's now. So add on another $1k at least, that'll bring you to at least$6,800.
If I were to do it again i'd go for an 04+, i've been drivingan 04 xj8 for almost 2 weeks now. in my opinionthey seem to be amade betterall around from a smoother ride to just a better feel in general. What a jump from the x308 that's for sure.I've seen lots for less than $14k with full warranties (about to expire i'm sure)
Do yourself a favor and like kenny there says, do the whole tensioner job. I'd check the $25 thermostat and get a metal water pump for $90, asthose are bound to go out if theyhaven't already.
Don't use cheap gas, and don't live in the south hah, and youprobably won'thave to wory about the euro nikasil mistake unless it's already toast. goodluck dude, hope this helps you out.

My XJRs been at the mechanic for a week now. I'm not sure if he's still diagnosing it, or using it for fun. The word now is that there's oil in the air box, and that the spark plugs in Bank B(if I'm correct, the bank directly in front of the drivers seat [USA spec]) are saturated with oil. If this were a Nikasil issue, I would reason that both Banks A & B would be affected: evenly. It's worth noting that the previous owner replaced Bank A's coil packs.
Atom, I think you may have hit the nail on the head. My 'diamond in the rough' is but mere fools gold. However, there's just something about the damn thing I like.
Any advice is always welcome.

Talked to the mech. last night, he thinks there's a baffle missing from a "flame trap" type of device. Several QUARTS of oil were in the airbox. I no longer think Nikasil is the culprit, which is a relief. I will keep you guys updated. Any one ever experienced anything like this?

perfect man, glad to hear it.. ive no supercharger so I couldn't tell you, but that doesnt sound cheap hah.. i'm guessing at least $1200? Wish more people owned jaguars around here, could definitely use a jag junkyard around to snag pieces from!
How much will your mechanic score one for?

My mechanic says 800, but I've found them myself as low as 500 rebuilt. I'm starting to second guess his diagnosis after talking to a few places. He wants 3k to do everything: engine tensioners and replace the blower. My reasoning in second guessing is that if the blower were bad, ALL the cylinders would be filling with oil. Not just the right bank. A supercharger rebuilder that I talked to says that the intake might be clogged, causing the blower to suck oil from the oil pan, or the headgasket might be blown. I'm starting to loose my patience with it. It does suck not having a lot of "seasoned pros" when it comes to Jags. BMW/Volvo/etc seem to have a bit more fanatics and shadetree mechanics to bounce ideas and problems off of. Perhaps I should have gotten the XJR with the straight-6 instead.

Well if you decide to do the tensioners (i'd do all 4) make sure your tech has the cam locking tools for that engine, mind didn't. My local mechanic did both sets/guides/blades for $624 total in less than 6.5hrs total. I watched most of it, a lil time consuming, but definitely NOT an intensive job.
I dislike beamers cosmetically, I dig DB9s though...very sweet.
If gas permits in the next few years, I plan on purchasing a newer 08 XJ, Love them all around!
