I have recently send me vehicle into the shop to get things fixed such as, new rear shocks, 2 coolent hoses replaced. And upon driving home my cruise control does not work, the light does not turn on and the buttons do not do anything along with a “failsafe engine mode” pops up.
I have no idea what they did to do this or do I have any idea how to fix the problem. I would very much like to keep it out of the shop for I have already spent 2500 on it this time
The usual culprit is the brake light switch which has two sets of contacts: one for the brake lights, the other for the cruise control. If you do a search of the forums you will find lots of information and procedures for testing and repair.
That has to be one of the worst things. To take our ladies in for a repair and
after paying for it, discovering new problems. I have seen this situation occur
quite a few times so there are reasons, I am just unsure of what they are.
Cruise control is disabled when the car is in failsafe mode. I would direct my efforts at resolving that problem and see if the cruise works when the car runs properly.
Start with pulling all computer codes from the OBDII connector. Also check the areas around where the shop did their work to see if they disturbed anything, left something unplugged or broke a hard vacuum line (which is where my money is) while they were replacing stuff under the hood. I would approach the shop to check their work, some places will, others will get defensive and tell you it was fine when it left.
Does the failsafe engine mode only pop up when you try to use cruise control, with the only symptoms being lack of cruise control and the light on the cruise button turning off? You may have a vacuum leak between your cruise solenoids and the tb cruise vacuum actuator, it happened to me... the lines there are brittle plastic and can break easily
Did you fix this? If not: I had the exact same issue and it was a vacuum leak on the little cruise control thingy in the engine bay. It was rubbing on an engine bay cover and it kept breaking. I couldn't find a replacement so I fixed mine with some heatshrink It looks bad but has worked flawlessly for many months now.
