Default OBD Code Questions

Always been a BMW and Porsche guy. Current daily driver is a 2003 Carrera. Just purchased a 2003 XJ8 with 111k miles. This may be heresy on this site, but I bought it for an LSx swap. My history includes building a Factory Five Roadster (1965 Shelby Cobra replica). Wanted a new project.

Flew down to Palm Beach, Florida to buy it and drove it back to Pensacola. Car was is Restricted Performance mode. Codes P0128, P0333, P1642, P1647 and pending P1000. P0128 just looks like a bad thermostat. P0333 is knock sensor. P1642 I haven't found anything definitive on this. P1647 oxygen sensor? P1000?

I have a kid that just turned 16 and needs a car. Have another kid who may be going to Japan for a year in September and the 16 year old could use his car when he's gone. Question is should I put money into fixing the XJ until I do the swap or just buy her a Civic/Corolla?

Welcome PCP...please introduce yourself here (only takes a couple minutes and is a site requirement)... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...-intro-must-5/

Japan is awesome, I'm trying to get back after the Olympics.

Your fixes are rather easy to say, ..so said, even a 16 yr old can do it (hint, hint...lol). Could you also please put your year and model in your signature so we don't have to ask you for it. As you being a Beemer and Porsche guy, certain model yrs have their quirks and an XJ8 (NA unit) is different than an XJR (SC unit) for repairs.

The 1642 is a CAN communication error...which may clear up once these issues are tackled....Jaguar Xj8 P1642 Engine Trouble Code - Jaguar Xj8 P1642 OBD-II Diagnostic Powertrain (P) Trouble Code For Jaguar Xj8 | EngineTroubleCode.com
For the O2 sensors, this is from the How To section at the top of this forum.... https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...cement-195018/
For the thermostat, check the housing, if its plastic, ..replace it with the thermostat.
For the knock sensor, almost assuredly it is the sensor itself, but before going through that, check your connector. If that passes the mustard, then review knock sensor replacement... https://www.dropbox.com/s/ti0842gz36...Y%20N.pdf?dl=0

The P1000 is the ECU unable to complete is cycle because of the listed faults. Once you fix those and clear the codes, it should clear after a start cycle or two, ..as said in the O2 instructions.

I agree. My son did his junior college year abroad there. I went to visit for a month. Great people. Different outlook on life. Skied in Hokkiado, took the Shinkansen, participated in the Naked Man Festival and drove a rental car from Osaka to Shimonoseki. One of the most memorable things was that in a 1000 km round trip, never saw a piece of trash on the highway.

Thanks for the advice. I'll follow it. I use the Bentley's repair manual for my Porsche. Doesn't look like they have one for the X308. Is there a repair manual you recommend.

I concur, Japan is so clean, I tell folks about all the alley pubs and shopping vs the crap and smell in NYC and other US cities. I also enjoy the culture, I watch a lot of NHKtv and enjoy Sumo.

Here's the Workshop Manual link, its too large to post on site...http://www.mediafire.com/file/bu2w7j...anual.pdf/file
This is from the Sticky at the top of this forum (don't know its functional reliability, being an older post and updated over the years)...https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...archive-65998/
You'll want to bookmark this site, done by a site member... http://www.jagrepair.com/Default.htm ...you can contact him as well if you have Q's about the site.
Here's a very good source for wiring from that site (pdf attached)...

Figured out the knock sensor code. Looks like some rodent has been munching.

That's a whole lot cheaper than the sensor.

Default Update

Spliced wire to knock sensor and that code is gone.
Thermostat code has not returned since first cleared codes.
Switched leads between front left and right O2 sensors. P1647 switched to P1646, so ordering O2 sensor. (I always like being sure what the issue is before throwing parts at a problem. That mouse could have got at some more wires.)
Codes now P1646 and P1000.

Yeah, as you eliminated the codes I see the CAN code is now gone as well.
