OBD-computer interface/software info needed

I want to get an OBD-laptop interface for my '98 xj8 and am looking for info on what will give me the most access. I have been researching a good bit today without getting much info. I am finding software manufacturers saying they work well with Ford/Lincoln, etc but nothing about Jag.
At first, I just wanted to check and clear faults, but I am seeing that there is a lot more you can do. If possible, I would like to be able to get into the software and play around a bit with that a bit.
Does anybody have any experience with this?

There is really only one that will address/display the extended list of Jaguar codes, at least below the $2000 mark. Autoengenuity has a laptop based OBDII to UBS interface and the Jaguar specific software. It does not support changes to the car' systems.

I have two problems with this system based on a few days with a borrowed unit. The OBDII to USB converter sells for about $25 on eBay and for $250 at Autoegenuity and I found the stability less than I would have expected for the $500 total price. That was nearly 2 years ago and they may have gotten better.

. . . and that $25 eBay OBDII to USB converter comes with the software to read the standard code set.
But I agree, a less than $50 code reader is about all the hobby mechanic needs. I bought the under $100 version with freeze frame recording. That means it reports the status of a number of ECM sensors such as RPM, speed, power, etc. Never had a need for that level of information.

Yeah, I almost got one of the simple obd to usb cables just to clear codes and what not...but I decided to look into getting something a little more detailed and see how far the rabbit hole gets.
I am considering all this because I am planning on installing a PC in there and would like to have as many options as I can get...bluetooth, engine management, radio, gps, etc.

Not too sure how many miles this takes, but I think there is a procedure to speed this up, do a search or 2 on the forum.
