Default OBDII code reader blank screen

I plugged my Autel CAN OBDII reader into the CAN connector, screen stayed blank even after the ignition was turned to 'on' - nothing on the screen at all. So, I could have a faulty reader (it's brand new, first time I used it) or I have no power/signal coming from the ECM? What do you think? Is there a simple test I can perform? Any fuses affecting the CAN connector? The car runs fine no issues, I just wanted to read codes/see if there were any, just because I had the tool..... any suggestions welcome. Thanks Allan

The fuse that power the data port are fuse #3 in the LH heelboard and fuse #4 in the trunk. Oh, the boot to you!

Is the CAN connector the same as the OBDII socket?

Might take it back to store and have them demonstrate it.

Jim, yes, I wasn't sure what to call it, it's the one in the drivers footwell near the transmission tunnel. Thanks Allan.

Thank you sparkenzap, fuse #4 LH Healboard blown. Changed fuse, OBDII working now, no codes. I noticed that only MISFIRE, CCM, HO2S are READY, all the others are N/A...did I not wait long enough or is it likely that they are not supported on a 1998 XJ8? Thanks, Allan

NA is not applicable.. All is well. You have a P1000, do you not?

As you see from my edit, I had the wrong code. Your scanner must ignore P1111, which means "Readiness done", because one or the other codes should be displayed.

Quoting from page 1 of the "DTC Summaries" JTIS section:
"The following less frequently performed tests are identified as incomplete:
• Module $51 (identifies EMS ECM)
Catalyst
Evaporative purge system
O2 Sensor
EGR system
Further confirmation of the System Readiness Test status is available by retrieving the logged DTCs.
If DTC P1000 is logged in memory, the on-board diagnostic tests have not been completed.
If DTC P1111 is logged in memory, all on-board diagnostic tests have been completed.

Depends what scannner you have. Some of the cheaper ones won't read Jag codes before 2001 in UK.

auto enginuity works for my 98 XJ8 but I had to buy the Jaguar add on about $500 total. Does airbag warnings and a lot of jag specific items. Still cheaper than one dealer visit.
