Question Oil pan leak and other mechanics vocabulary..

I did get the oil changed in my car and, they said something about the 'bypass' is leaking, I saw it, the guy said it is plastic and a orange color
of liquid is seen. Also, oil pan is leaking.

This is what they wrote on my receipt:

R & R front shock and/or strut assembly both

IMC F shock absorber (special order)..

Anyone help please..

thank you!

If your car is an XJ8 built between 1998 and 2003 then the coolant pipe (bypass?) and thermostat tower are both plastic and can leak. The coolant should be orange in your car, so that would explain the leak you saw. I think a new bypass pipe is around $50 to $75 dollars? I haven't priced one in a while. If it is not cracked then it may just need new seals. I bought new seals at Advance Auto for about $3 and mine never leaked again. If he is talking about something else, then disregard all of the above, haha.

The oil pan, again if it's a 98 to 2003 XJ8 or XJR, is very easy to remove and re-seal. The new gasket will be $50 or less depending on where you buy it. Installation is very easy, they should just be careful not to over-torque the bolts.

If it's an XJ8 then isn't the bypass hose the short (3in?) rubber hose that goes from the water outflow pipe to the thermostat housing? There is a plastic hose (outflow hose) that connects to both sides of the block and has a little temperature sensor on it. Do you have any photos of the problem areas they pointed out?

Do you think it is ok to drive?? I do not use air conditioner.
The orange engine light came on again.

I drive probably only 5-6 miles when I go out.

The risk of overheating the engine would scare me too much to drive it, but that's just me. If you get that engine too hot in could cause serious and possibly permanent damage. If it is in fact leaking coolant, that should be repaired as soon as possible. What message comes with the orange light? Is it "coolant low"?

With regard to the leaking oil pan, that's probably not such a big deal as long as you check the oil regularly and insure it never gets low.

I had code read today, 0456 is what he said, erased it.
I know at dealer they do a smoke test, expensive, so mechanic could nor lift it up, he was busy, I still will try to take a picture underneath car.

P0456 is an emission system code, has nothing to do with a cooling system leak. It's probably the bypass valve malfunction that they mentioned.

You probably need to have the cooling system pressure tested to look for the orange coolant leak. Not an expensive test and could be done by almost any garage.

456 could be anything to include the gas cap to the EVAP purge valve.
