Oil for smallest V8

Oil for smallest V8
Hi all,
I'm starting to get all the bits together for a full service. Oil, filter, air filter, plugs and co and found out that I need 6l of oil, but nowhere is an oil grade recommended...
What oil is recommended...? I searched the site and found nothing. Google wasn't my friend either...
What oil can you recommend and what grade is best suited for a daily use all year long (min. -10 degrees, max. +40 degrees)?
Cheers
Damien

If you look in the handbook that came with the car, there is a table showing viscosity range vs. temperature, and minimum SAE specification. You will have problems finding an oil that DOESN'T meet that SAE specification.
Then it comes down to personal preference. Would you like to pay the minimum for an oil that meets the specification? Or pay more for a better quality oil that might have some minor return in terms of protection and fuel economy?
For a car like this I favour a semi-synthetic or synthetic, with viscosity 5w40. If you used a basic oil, it would be 5w30 or 15w40. The 5w40 gives a low viscosity on a cold start, but the added protection when hot of a 40. Nice compromise.

Cheers mate... I was looking through all the books I had for the car and that was not amoungst them. Shame.
I was thinking of a 5W40, as you can get that stuff anywhere here and it doesn't cost an arm and leg I am willing to pay for an oil that will protect the engine and last a while (15.000 km intervall) whilst causing less friction.
I had good experience in the past with Liqui Moly 5W40 low friction oils... Might just take that. Heck, it is only 6l. If it were the XJ-S V12 I'd be mega fussy as ~12l of oil cost...
But cheers!

Having said what I said, right now the car has some Shell Rotella T 15w40 in it, just because I had a gallon spare. I thought I'd give it a couple of thousand miles, then change for the semi-synthetic T5. The Rotellas have extra detergents for diesel engines, so have some flushing effect.
Rotella T fixed a sticking tappet on my Land Rover V8. Great stuff.

Very true. There's little or no evidence that any one of the types or viscosities recommended by Jag is notably better than another.
Use which ever pleases you the most. The car will be just fine.
