Default Which oil / viscosity for UK? 1998 XJ8 4 Ltr

I understand the recommended engine oil is 5w30 synthetic - what are you using in the UK ie specification and manufacturer (our climate is variable LOL)....Thanks Allan

There's no real reason to deviate in viscosity from what's recommended in the owner's manual. I'd be surprised that Jag specified synthetic though.

Thanks Mikey, the challenge I have is that there seems to be so may 'choices' temperature ranges / viscocities to choose from in the Jaguar care manual....I plan to ring the garage that serviced the car for it's previous owner to ask what they put in it - When I took the cam cover off the other day, the internals were absolutely pristine and so clean....I want to try to keep it that way. That's correct, which means you're free to choose the most suitable. It also means that the engine is not sensitive to slight variations in viscosity. I think you'll be OK not matter what you choose.

I called the dealership that maintained the car for the previous owner, he said they used 5w30 synthetic, and a cleaning flushing agent prior to draining the old old. He said they use VW flushing agents and oil. Allan

The handbook states that several different oil types can be used. 5w30 or 10w40 for the UK is fine for our climate. Provided that the oil grade matches ACEA A3 spec you're good to go.

I'm using Castrol Magnatec 10w40 semi synthetic. 4lt is £20 in Asda at the moment. I don't think fully synthetic oil in my 98 XJR is needed, and although I'm sure it wouldn't do any harm at all, I don't think it's needed considering that I'll be changing it every 8k anyway.

Bottom line, make sure the spec is right and you'll be ok.
