one brake light stays on 24/7
My brake lights work normally... two of them, anyway.
The right rear brake light never goes away-- even when the car is turned off.
I removed the everlasting brake light bulb so as to preserve battery.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have no idea where to look.
thanks

Your SLCM (Security Locking Control Module) needs to be repaired or replaced if you can find a compatible used one).
The SLCM module is located under the battery in the trunk.
Look at the following thread:

also use the forum search function with "SLCM"

Hi pappahobby
Not sure about the $50 -- their webpage says $200.
Module Master 2006 S. Main, Moscow, Idaho 83843, USA
(1998-2003) Security Module Rebuild Jaguar XJ8, XJR, XK8 $200.00
This rebuild is guaranteed to restore your malfunctioning security and locking module with nonfunctional or always on brake light on either passenger or driver's side. Usually the driver's side is affected. Another symptom of a bad security module is the third brake lamp staying on continuously. If your security module looks like the one pictured, we can fix it.

Looks like my SLCM is bad: The right rear stop light will not come on. Checked the bulbs, checked the wiring and continuity of the white board and sockets. No power.
Ross reminded me that the SLCM has separate circuits for right stoplight and left stoplight.
Bob: I like your comment about a idle high side power switch. Where are they, how do you tell which one does what? I ain't good at electronics. But I would hate to lose the car for a couple of weeks sending the module to Idaho.
For the moment, taking braking signal from blue wire left lights and bridging to orange on right. Same as RobertDIY's youtube video. At least the cops won't be pulling me over after dinner out (with some/lots of zinfandel!).

VCATS
Banar,
Whoever repairs your module needs your cars VCATS number. This can be found (eventually) on a long paper sticker somewhere under your grey felt trunk lining.
Look in area around CD & navigation unit on left side. But could be anywhere! (Jaguar version of Easter egg hunt)
Some regular vendors advertise on E-Bay. I'm not sure what happens if you install a box with the correct LNG number but different VCATS.
Module Repair of Van Nuys, CA repaired my Security & Locking Module. Not promoting them, but coupla years later still working. Fast turnaround.

@Coventrywood
Thank you.
btw, is there a way to confirm that SLM is the problem? (before sending it)
