This thread inspired me to do this mod on my '98 XJR. I had a little more of a challenge, in that the early 98 XJR's had extremely dark wood trim that was not installed on any other X308 to my knowledge, and was not continued very long. I found a veneer piece on ebay from a VDP, and I sent it to Madera Concepts in California where they installed new veneer to match my original wood grain, and then stained it to match the dark original. During my restoration process, I sent all my interior trim to Madera and they did a fantastic job, as they did with this piece.
I'll try to remember to take a picture of the overhead console with the new wood veneer piece, and post it here. I really think the dark wood trim looks stunning, and I'm not sure why they didn't use it very long. I had not thought of doing this modification until I saw this post a while back. It really spiffed up the overhead console!

Did this same swap out today. There is a plastic lock screw in the sun glass compartment that allows you to drop the whole module. Then one connector plug to release the power connector. After that just gently pry up on the old panel. There are about four small bent metal tabs that need to be pushed in on the bottom of the panel and sides. I used some wide putty knives to spread the pressure and not break the flat panel.
I had to bend in the metal tabs to get them to reseat when putting the new walnut panel back in. I used the residual glue (like credit card glue) to reapply the new walnut panel. Everything looks good and works.

I just did this upgrade too and just as a reference, the X300 wood insert fits the x308 perfectly. As an added bonus, the sunglass holder in the x300 used a leather/vinyl piece instead of cloth on the inside, so it looks a little bit nicer. I just removed the wood and the sunglass holder from the x300 unit and installed onto my original console.
