Oxygen Sensor - Problem remains after replacing a new sensor
Hello all. I'm new to the forum. I have a MY2001 X308 3.2 V8. The car has done a mere 64k km (equivalent to something like 50k miles).
Problem is, I had a CEL come on a month ago and was diagnosed using an OBDII reader as P0031, which I understand to be the UK Driver's side upper o2 sensor. Having read through the forums, I went ahead and ordered the Bosch 15627 sensor, which bolted straight on. The codes were then erased.
The CEL went off momentarily (for say about 2miles) and it came back on. Had the codes checked and the same code came up. I (actually my mechanic) then tried to swap the sensors between the left and right banks, but funnily enough the same code again came up.
I am now out of ideas. My car is running at a ridiculous 20L/100km and I am worried about contamination of the catalytic converter.
I would be most grateful if someone could shed some light on this.
Cheers,
Jeff

Jeff:
According to the manual. your assumptions so far are correct. The fast that the fault did not follow the sensor in the swap indicates you either have an open (disconnect) in the senses (not the heater) wiring, or a ground. So, the connector and the wiring must be checked. First, I would do it visually, then with a meter.

The P0031 is indeed the right hand side upper O2 sensor. It is related to the heating:
HO2 Sensor 1/1 heater power supply circuit: open circuit
HO2 Sensor 1/1 heater control circuit: open circuit, high resistance
HO2 Sensor 1/1 heater failure
I think there is also a relays for the O2 sensors; you might want to check them (including wires)
