Default P1516

Hey all, trying to help a friend with the P1516 code on his 99 XJ8. I was surprised nothing came up on search.

Naturally is gear change neutral/drive fault. It happens randomly and car goes into safe mode.

Any suggestions would be great!

Regards,

Flyfish

Flyfish:
There are known issues with the transmission harness connection at the gearbox. I would start by cleaning the connections.

Since I'm not familiar with Jags, any tips on location and accessing wiring for cleaning etc?

Thanks again!

The transmission connector is located at the left rear just above the oil pan.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestion & info. We tried that but it went into safe mode again.

Any thoughts on what else I may take a look at? I've been a rover guy for a long time, so I know what it's like to chase gremlins. Definitely a love/hate relationship!!

Thanks for your help!

Can you provide a little more location detail?

Is it a plug directly on the tranny, or different?

I assume it has to be accessed from beneath. If so, so I need to drop exhaust?

I appreciate the assistance!

The connector is on the back of the lower transmission housing on the left side, just above the pan. Jack up the left rear side and you should be able to reach it from the side.

If you are using the 'J'Gate shifter and moving to 4th then I would suspect the microswitch failure. It is mounted on the selector lever illumination module and a cam plate operates the switch. Here is the DTC guide for your car.

Wow, that's great Bob!

Checked/cleaned plug per previous suggestion. Cleared codes, went for a drive and failsafe engine mode came on while going down highway. Checked codes....1516 again. Not sure if the microswitch would put it into failsafe?? Never moved shifter from "D", all gear indicators illuminate. Happy to check that and/or other suggestions.

Thanks for all the help!

1516 decided to invite a couple friends. 443 & 507 popped up.
Part-load is clean
Checked as many vacuum lines as I could find.
Cleaned TB, MAF
Brake switch is fine (cruise doesn't work)

Any thoughts??

Just for fun, I was going to do a hard reset.

The proceedure is: Unhook negative battery cable and touch to positive cable while the positive is still connected to battery?? Is that correct???

For 5-10 seconds or so?
