Default Painted Coachline Removal

Those are the color-matching bumpers on the doors.

JTIS says refer to Section 501-18 for removal. I can't find that page.

Does anyone have 501-18 or can tell me how to remove the coachlines? They're pretty firmly attached to the doors and front fender and, I don't want to break the fasteners-- or whatever is holding them on. I need to do some paint touch-up and getting behind the little bumpers would help...

Thanks.... Mark

Hello Mark,
The fender [ wing ] trim is held on with the black glue type strips that hold licence plates etc.
It sticks by the old UK standard of pooh to a blanket.
The door trim is probably the same, if there are clips it is a dead cert one or two will break.
I think body shops use an angled tool to start the removal process.
You could try heating the trim { honey i need to borrow the hair dryer }, and then use picture wire once you have made a start.
I add a picture of an X300 fender trim.
John

Fender trim reverse side.

Thanks John:

On closer examination, I can tell they're glued on... Just didn't expect That.

Mine are staying where they've been affixed for 20 years. Some time before I bought the car-- more than 15 years ago-- the right door got a respray and now, there's some flaking at the coachline. I was thinking the surface prep would be easier with the trim removed.... Removing and replacement is far too much work for just a little touch-up. The plastic coachlines, set where they are, will provide a good masking line-- just painting up to the edge as opposed to Under it.

Hairdryer and picture wire is a good tip, though... I'm sure that's as recommended in 105-18, wherever that page may be ...

Thanks again...

Another tool that poses lower risk to the paint is nylon fishing line, worked through the double-faced tape like a cheese cutter.

Cheers,

Don
