Default Painting chrome window trim black like XJR 100?

So I really like the “cleaner” look of the trim around the greenhouse in black vs. all chrome which came stock on my ’02 XJR. Like the “Shadowline” trim on BMW sport packages. I just read through the silver XJR restoration thread and it had the black trim and it looks great compared to the chrome.

Has anyone experimented with making the chrome trim black? Either by painting, or maybe with vinyl trim tape? I’ve searched the site and Googled, but can’t come up with anything. Perhaps I’m using the wrong search terms? I figure the OEM replacement pieces will be prohibitively expensive.

Any thoughts, links, etc would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

They have paint that you can peel away (just saw it at the parts store this morning) try that to see if you like it, if you don't just peel away and no harm done!

Yes, Plasti dip- sorry, forgot the name. My head is still fuzzy from all that insane acceleration in the F-Type this weekend.

I like the plastidip idea. I haven’t used it before, or looked at it much, guess I will. I was concerned about regular paint and having to scuff the trim, and then the paint not holding up well and having scratched up trim to go back to.

Don’t suppose someone has tried it on the trim already and has some input on how well it looks/lasts?

Thanks for the idea.

Beginning at post #95 in this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...h-78937/page5/
of XJR Prototype 's refresh he experiments with plastidip and I think further on in the thread he suggests more permanent paint. It's a long thread but it might give you something to look at.

Yep, I do suggest using the plastic-dip first to the see the results and see if you like it in person and can live with it.

I personally experimented a bit with plasti-dip. I always liked the look of the XJR 100, so decided to paint the trim and wheels of my own XJR. Nevertheless looked pretty cool, easy to apply and easy to clean, but after a few weeks I returned the car back to the stock silver wheels and chrome trim because with car being black, blacking out the wheels and trims took away from some necessary contrast.

Pretty cool stuff but having done the spraying myself, I admittedly did so by applying thin coats, which made its removal a bit of a hassle and required me to get plastic-dip removal spray.

Thought I had a picture of the window trim done too, but at least here is my XJR's wheels plastic-dip in anthracite.
