Default Parking Brake Replacement

Hey Folks,

can someone share the steps of replacing the parking brake, I want to install news ones, and although I have seen the installation diagram I feel like maybe it can a little clearer.

I'm assuming you mean the brake shoes. Pretty straight forward. Use a screwdriver to turn the toothed wheel to pull the shoes in a bit. Unhook the springs and the pins holding in the shoes. Pins are usually 90 degree turn or similar.
Install is reverse, then adjust.

That said, the chances you have worn out your parking brake shoes has got to be essentially zero, so I'm wondering why you want to change them

Thank you for sharing, that helped to visualize the steps more.

i wanted to change them because when i engage the parking brake (emergency brake) the car still moves a bit (much more noticeable on inclines) so i figured time to change them out? Would you just recommend tightening the adjusters?

My bet is they just need adjustment. Remove the wheel and pop off the dust cap in the rotor hole (itd a small 6th hole on the face). Spin the rotor until you see the toothed adjuster wheel. I tend to adjust until I can't spin the wheel by hand any longer with the brake off, and then back it off at least one full turn. Goal is about 3 to 4 clicks to hold car.

It might be far easier to adjust the slop out of it if you turn the 13mm nut. In front of the differential is a curved bar under the driveshaft. There’s a nut there you can tighten that will also tighten the park brake cable.

You might want to follow the factory procedure for setting the parking brakes, it addresses both adjustments:
  1. ensure parking brake cable is slack (not engaged)
  2. Adjust drum pad adjuster in one wheel just until the wheel can't be turned by hand anymore. Back off by 4 ish notches on the adjuster.
  3. Repeat above on other side wheel.
  4. Finally, adjust 13mm nut on parking brake cable linkage so that you get the desired 4 clicks of pbrake lever to engagement.

Awesome input everyone. I truly appreciate it. Hoping to tackle this early next week. I had ordered shoe pads off of rockauto but I might as well return them - I will try the methods above and do a quick recap once done.

thanks!

Im in the king charles now - it takes me about 6 clicks for the pbrake to sort of engage, definitely above the 3-4 that it should take.
