Default Pedal Position Sensor - Possible Rebuild Option

Recently I had 2 trips with my car suddenly going into Fail Safe mode. Not Fun. Fault code shows as P-1121 which the manual lists as: “Pedal position sensor has announced its retirement”

I know the Pedal position sensor is unavailable but I googled the Denso # on the sensor and a partial match comes up for a Toyota/Lexus “Throttle Boby level sensor”. Clearly not the same part but the potentiometer portion looks identical.

The part is only $58.00 on Amazon so if it could be adapted to rebuild the PPS it would be a great option to having the throttle body rebuilt (screen shot below).

The photos are of my PPS.

Here is what I see:

-The potentiometer looks totally identical – 4 pin; identical casting, size shape, squared shaft.

-The inner cam (that connects to the throttle plate) is different – the Jag cam would need to be swapped

-The outer cam is also different. It looks like a mirror image so the potentiometer must rotate the opposite direction on the Toyota unit. Again, the cam would need to be switched out.

-Something that gives me caution is that the orientation of the shaft relative to the connector is different between our sensor and the Toyota sensor. I assume that the shaft could be rotated to match the Jag unit and then change out the front and back cams. But that is the big if.

- I think the potentiometer is the same. The only part numbers are on the cable cam for each unit. If Denso made different potentiometers, then there would likely be a part number on it.

Has anybody done this retrofit?

Over the years there has been a lot of discussion about this part. It would appear that Jaguar went to a lot of trouble to make sure that it couldn't be replaced, thus rendering the car useless. I assume they tied Denso into a legally binding agreement not to make anything similar. Fixing the problem required a complete new throttle body, at about $2,000 , but they may not be available now. The only other solution is to buy a throttle position sensor for a racing engine. They can be specified with the parameters you require. Cost is about $200.

  • Faulty electric throttle control actuator
  • Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) that is out of adjustment or faulty
  • Vacuum leaks in the intake manifold or related vacuum hoses
  • Electrical issues such as loose, damaged, or corroded wires/connectors
  • ECM/PCM that is faulty
  • These are the cited causes of that code. You might find it worthy to check for vacuum leaks and of course, frayed wiring.
