Default Picked up the XJR and on a 1700 mile road trip home

Thursday I was very happy to fly out from Wichita to Atlanta and pick up my new XJR. Got a taxi from the airport to buckhead motors, who I sent the car off to go over with a fine tooth comb before taking the trip. I had the following done:

Chain tensioners: Both primary and secondary
Valve cover gaskets
Spark Plugs
Oil Change
Transmission service
All Belts changed
Tire rotation and front wheel alignment.

Its was a flawless ride for the first 1000 miles. Drove her from Atlanta to Amelia Island for the car auction and show. I also participated in a road tour which stopped included the Brumos private collection in Jacksonville.

Next stop was Destin, Florida on the panhandle near Pensicola. Nice place to stop as I had been there many times as a kid.

Then came a not so pleasant ride from Destin to New Orleans. 3 accidents on the same highway (10) in 3 different states brought me to a stop, the longest wait was an hour, the other were about a 20-30 minute delay in traffic. Just towards the end of my journey in New Orleans just getting out of the traffic jam, a frustrated and impatient driver nearly took me out but I dodged by going to the shoulder. The roads are very rough in New Orleans, and the Jag decieded to let me know it didn't like the pothole adventure by giving me a check engine light. I didn't actually see it come on but it had to be around that time. Still runs and drives perfectly.

I went to autozone to retrieve the codes, with 2 returning. PO442 & P1111.

This morning I got a check gas cap indicator on the dash which quickly went away when I fully tightened it. Perhaps that was just a stored code?

The other code P1111. This a system pass it seems. So I disconnected the battery and reconnected after 30 seconds or so and the CE light remains. I went and filled the car up (low tank) just for good measure and its still there.

My guess from looking around here is that there's nothing to really worry about until I get home Thursday but from the research P0442 is a bit of a bugger to solve if its not the gas cap. I'm curious why it chose to do this nearly 6 hours later of continuous running (never shut the car off), my only thought is the tank got low and that aggravated it.

I'm continuing to Texas tomorrow.

Be careful. Lots of nuts out there between Texas and NO.

I don't know that I'd expect the CE light to go out after a short power off, but any car parts store that can pull the codes should be able to cancel the CE indicator. In any case, if the problem been corrected, the CE light should go away after a certain amount of use.

Loose gas cap can cause P0422, so that may have been it. It will take repeated drive cycles to cancel the CEL, or you can have Autozone or equivalent do it with their reader. The P1111 is just reference, not an issue.

ooh sensitive thing! buy a cheap code reader, clear the code and be on your way.....if it keeps coming back, look into it.

Doesn't a hard reset also clear the codes? That would have allowed him to do it himself while on the road... When you pulled the battery cable, touch the two leads together (without them both being connected to the battery, of course) and hold them together for a few seconds. That clears the whole system. For me, it was a must anyways, just to start with a clean slate. I checked for all codes first, then hard reset. It helped to cure my steering wander, and I've heard of NUMEROUS other bugs it cures, like seat and window module problems, etc...

PS: It doesn't Always help, and it's not a cure all, but it might help.

Nope, only OBD delete, replacement part error correction or cycles, with the engine its 20 or 30 I can't remember what.

OBD codes are NOT cleared by a 'hard reset' (disconnecting battery terminals and shorting together to dissipate charges stored in system capacitors).

Only an OBD reset from a scanner or multiple drive cycles without a repeat of the event will clear them.

I'm back. The check engine light turned itself off the next day. Absolutely fantastic trip. I'll go through some of the highlights.

I picked up the XJR in Atlanta last Thursday and drover her down to Amelia. It was pretty much love at first sight.

The first day we participated the the Porsche driving experience road tour which stopped to see the Brumos collection which is shown by invitation only. Amazing collection of racers and various Porshces and Mercedes spanning the last 30 years or so. They don't allow photos, but if you google the name you'll get some results. We also when to the naval base to autocross their latest Boxter/Cayman models.

On the way back I took the ferry to Amelia Island and thought it a good opportunity to get a picture of the new Jaaaaaag on the beach shortly after unloading. My judgment was quite poor on Jaaaaag vs sand.

Then came the Gooding and RM auctions that evening and the following day. It was an incredible offering off cars in the perfect beachside setting. The highlight was the 1950s Ferrari Mexico which sold for 3.9 million. At Barret-Jackson a car like that would be behind velvet ropes with security, but here you can get right up and touch it. Totally different crowd.

Then I left for Destin for an overnight stay on my way to New Orleans. My grandmother flew in to join me for the remaining 2 days in New Orleans and a stop in Paris, Texas to visit her sister.

In front to the we stayed in (Hotel Monteleone) in the French Quarter

The final tally for the trip was 2200 miles believe it or not. It would have been flawless had I tightened down the gas cap. Obviously can't blame the car, but it was a good feeling when it turned off.

Here's the figures at one of the auctions I attended. It was great to watch.
