On it's way out
Rebuilding transmissions for 30 years. My 2000 XJ8 with 137000 km's approx 85000 miles has an unpleasant 3-4 shift so it's on my to do list in the next couple of months when we have a bay available. Probably an 'A' drum and Sonnax pr valve then as well.
We start see these ZF5HP24's at around 100 000 miles although more commonly in Bmw X5's and Audi's (maybe they are just a more common vehicle around here)

My '97 X308 3.2l V8 still has it's original tranny (merely passed the 100.000 miles mark) and seems to be jumping into "limp home" mode every so often. It will change gears smoothly and without any head nod. Every so often it will not go into 5th but I think that is due to some electrical gubbins.
I'm flushing and changing the filter tomorrow... I won't select any choice in the poll yet, as I don't know what will happen afterwards, after all contacts are cleaned and the ATF is replaced (not with ZF Lubeguard or what ever ZF call it).

When I started my business a bit over 25 years ago anything over 100k miles was considered "extra" .... Transmissions normally failed before that and most engines were done at 125k.
The Ford Taurus was designed for 100k ....... I remember discussing the early sealed MB transmissions with a Benz engineer and they were going for something like 125k. If MB was going for 125k .. I bet ZF was not.
Very few owners kept cars past 100k -- and they sealed the transmissions so that they would not be incorrectly serviced. The fluid was not widely available.
Everything lasts longer today with less maintenance -- back when these cars were designed getting 100-125k was the outer limits.

Hmm, I am beginning to wonder about that...My 722.6 started slipping a couple months ago. Car has 132K. It is probably because I have a lead foot and I have been doing it since I bought the car new. Decide to pull out the engine and tranny as a package last weekend. Tore apart the tranny and saw the K-2 clutch had chattered because of slippage and caused damaged to the rear planetary gear carrier. I got the banner rebuild kit and a new Mercedes rear planetary gear carrier all for around $600 this past Monday from a local transmission parts shop. I rebuilt the entire tranny every evening and installed the engine / tranny package this afternoon. I am beat tired as I am typing this. Have to hook up everything and test drive this weekend. Keep fingers crossed that I have no more tranny problems. Oh btw, that was my '97 Mercedes C280. My Jag XJR which has the same 722.6 tranny has 146K and no problems yet.

Mine is still going, and some may say it is "on it's way out" simply because when cold (not allowing the car to warm up before putting it in gear) shifting out of first into second, you do get a little jerk (I am assuming this is due to the PRV pressure spike issue. Going to replace ASAP. Probably with tax money >
