Default Possible A-Drum Failure?

Hi Forum,

Car has been running like a dream until two days ago when it suddenly went into limp mode and displayed "Gearbox Fault" with Check Engine light also appearing.

Does not drive forward in '2', '3', '4' or 'D' positions.

Car reverses with no problems whatsoever.

When put into 'D' position I can feel it go into gear, but the car does not drive. If I apply a few rev's, the car jerks forward hard, gearbox fault displays again, and goes back into limp mode.

Code P1722 recorded.

From previous posts I've looked at:

-Output Speed Sensor resistance at TCM connector measures 332 Ohms, so that looks ok.
- No signs of any transmission fluid leaks. Can fluid still get low without a leak.
-Can feel it go into gear when selecting 'D' position, so I don't suspect shifter or cable adjustments.

I've narrowed it down to either somehow the fluid level has gone down, maybe a blocked filter or most likely, a mechanical failure (i.e. drum failure).

Based on the forum members experiences, does this sound like a mechanical failure?

I can change the fluid and filter myself, but wondering if it's worth the effort based on the above investigation.

Thoughts/comments/advice always welcome :-)

Regards,
Beaky.

Given the history of these transmissions, just pull it out. Either the drum is gone, or the bearing and o ring failure that I had.
I understand the hope that something easy will fix it, but the odds are very poor.

There are lots of good threads on this, including my own (he said modestly).

Search under my user name for 5hp24 home repair, and you should find it.

Default Possible A-Drum Failure?

Thanks for the response guys. Yep, had a feeling mechanical. Decision now is to whether attempt it myself or take it to a place in Stockton, CA I know.

Reading through the threads yesterday, ixj8it has a pretty cool thread on it :-)

avt007, searched for your thread using your name and "5hp24 home repair", and came up empty. I'd like to read the thread if you can direct me there. I'm having tranny issues on my 2000 VDP as well. One thing I'm finding confusing is that I'm not retrieving and DTCs on the transmission. But there is definitely a problem....similar to what beaky described, only no trouble codes. Wife said "Gearbox Fault" did show up on the display before she got it home last week, but it doesn't show up now if run the car. It will go into R fine, but not pulling in D gears.
