Talking Is it possible to upgrade to factory navigation

Hi guys,
I've been reading and it seams that everyone that wants to upgrade their sound system wants to go with an after market system instead of upgrading to a newer Jaguar system. Is there a reason for this? I really wanted to keep everything in my car Jaguar. I have a 1999 Jaguar xj8L that has the out of date cassette player with the CD changer in the trunk, this isn't really a problem.

I have a garmon gps that I can stick on my windshield, but it seems to me to take way from the stylish interior. I like the look of the 2005 to 2008 radio and navigation system and appears that it would plug right in where my old climate control and radio is now. Is this plausible? Or would I run into to so many problems that it wouldn't be worth the effort?

Thanks guys I would appreciate any advice anyone has to give.

The later systems are not compatible reason being they use fibre optics on the 'infotainment' connections.

Way too much progress in GPS since then. You can't go back.

I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of my GPS wire running from my dash to my lighter. Tapping into the overhead console looks like the best, but finding 12v that shuts off with the ignition is the tough part. No luck yet.

As far as my iPOd adapter goes, I love it. I'll probably go from its hiding place in the center console to a clever mount, but not right now. I kept the stock (premium) speakers and amp; it's really good.
