Default Power Steering leak

My '98 XJ8 is leaking fluid by way of gravity now. It started with a little whine and then let loose while i was driving. I drove quite a distance on the expressway to get it home so there weren't too many turns. I changed the O ring at the discharge of the pump with a closly matching one but stll leaks. In fact the O ring looked OK I replaced. I have a new high pressue hose I bought for $170.00US. Any ideas what else could be the problem before I just put a hose on it? SHould i just get a new pump while I am at it? Thanks

makes sense to pinpoint the leak before throwing parts at it.
Have you looked at the return line from the reservoir? If memory serves me correctly it is a simple clamped connection. A hardened hose will cause a leak there and a quick snip and reattachment may be all you need.

Yes, the pump looks fine but I found the leak was coming thru the gasket. Do you think I could break the pump apart and get a new gasket. The fill line was impossible to get off. H cut it with shears. Even whne it was on the bench I had to use a razor to get teh harded fill line off. I figure I might as well chance rubber and stuff while I am at it. It nearly 17 years old and all origional rubber.

I appear to have a leak at what is the bottom hose in this picture. It only occurs when the car is running. Between this leak and the fluid burning on the hot engine as it worked its way down, I thought I had an oil leak.

I'm going to give the "cut a section from the hose tip and reattach" method a go. Any suggestions? How can I plug the reservoir while I do that, or do I need to drain the fluid?

I think I would suction the fluid out of the reservoir with a turkey baster and store it in a clean container, before cutting the hose. You will still get a mess, but not as much.

I may have to do this as well. Pretty damp at the hose end.

My power steering fluid reservoir was leaking from the cap as well. A new O ring from the local hardware store worked perfectly. Cheapest repair I have ever done on my XJR.
