Not sure if he's updated it, but this car audio list is spot-on or @ least it was.

Charlzo...I am gonna see what they recommend amp wise for that speaker and if I don't like what they suggest I am thinking this little guy should do the trick.

Alpine MRV-M250 V-Power 250W Monoblock Amplifier

Or one of these with the 2 channels bridged

They would remove it and install a replacement that fits though. 2. From reading posts about the OEM speaker it wasn't that great to begin with so if I can replace it with something better I want to go that route. I am not interested in any trunk mounted subs so please don't recommend I go that route either. I want something that will replace and fit in the original space that gives good bass and will be run on its own amp.
I think the OEM dual coil sub sounds great and is perfectly balanced for the system. I replaced the foam surround myself for about $15. Yes, getting the squab and parcel shelf in an out is a pain, not too bad the second time though, don't break the seat belt guides on the shelf, BTW. But I think you may be happy with the stock sub turned up to max boost, unless you want to be "thumping" through the 'hood, in that case, go with a non-OEM unit.

Here's another speaker set to check out and they are really shallow and only 6.5"....
Amazon.com: Earthquake Sound SWS-6.5X 6.5-inch Shallow Woofer System Subwoofers (Pair): Electronics Amazon.com: Earthquake Sound SWS-6.5X 6.5-inch Shallow Woofer System Subwoofers (Pair): Electronics

As for your amps your looking at, I have the earlier version of that Alpine 250, mines the 240 and I barely add any gain to it and it rocks the car with some nice sound. I got mine from Crutchfield also.

It sounds like she is not using the stock amps .. or maybe the who system has been replaced.

The stock sub used twin voice coils on one speaker. It is not a duel speaker ...nor a sub with two tweeters.

Rebuilding the original speaker is the best way to go -- if all still stock.

I would worry that ordering a repair kit is taking a leap of faith on the assumption that THAT is the problem. Could you imagine the frustration of going through all of the repair steps, only to find the speaker itself is blown or the amplifier is defective?

You can clearly see if the foam surround is gone and you can feel/see the cone move if all is well except the surround. You just won't get the bass without the foam in good shape. Not really any guess work there.

What, AFTER you go through the pain in the butt of removing the seats and parcel shelf?

Yes, the pain, sometimes our Jags make life very hard on us......

You can actually see all that from the trunk area, looking at the speaker from the bottom, better?

So the guy who was gonna sell me that set of CDT speakers backed out the deal, *******. Tis ok though cause I bought these direct from CDT

Shop CDT Audio - CL-69S

Charlzo is still gonna be my speaker buddy and it looks like he can swing by my place to pick his up on his return from vacation trip so we will have a meet and greet bonding over java and jag talk. Always fun getting to meet forum members in person!

I also decided to go with the Alpine MRV-M250 amp to power it and picked one up on eBay for $65. So my equipment cost is at a measly $110 .

Please report back if this model 6x9 sub turns out to be a drop-in replacement physically, and will clear the fuel tank under, and the grill on top, or if there are any installation lessons-learned otherwise.

Obviously this isn't a drop-in replacement electrically for the OEM sub and system, but I'm more curious about the physical fit at this point.

Ok, just got it installed. It sounds fantastic. There was clearance above the gas tank, not much mind you but clearance none the same. Almost a drop in replacement. Had to widen the width a bit but was easily done with some hammer tapping...see pic. My original was not fixable....also see pic. So if you are looking for an after market replacement that can go in the factory hole this works! It won't upload more then one pic per post for me so 1st here is my blown factory speaker.

Next is the slight width modification needed. Just hammered down the metal lip of the hole a bit on both sides.

Last is pic of it installed. We used the factory spacer and the rear deck and original grill fits beautifully over it.

New install looks great. I'm blown away (no puns intended) at how bad your factory was. I'm used to just seeing the foam disintegrate but the cone in pieces is just ouch!

Glad to hear it's in and sounds great, I'm about to fire up a ton of overtime at work, so I'm hoping to get to my own experiments over the next few weeks.

Looks like this has been resolved. Late to the thread but for those who are reading "TB Speakers" has a model no. W69-1436 it is a 4 ohm direct plug and play replacement for an x305's, the x300's are the same gas tank set up. No trimming, bending or pounding necessary. www.tb-speaker.com

The problem with the TB's is finding them. I had come across them at one point in my search, but dismissed them when it became obvious that they just can't be found anywhere. On the off chance they pop up on ebay though, definitely worth a peek depending on the price.

Not to hijack this thread, but for any of you who are upgrading your stock subwoofer, I am looking for a repairable stock Alpine subwoofer. I tend to listen to alot of classical music so I don't need pounding bass response.

If you have one you don't need, please let me know.

Thanks,
