Preventative maintenance

On my 1998 XJ8 with 70,000 miles when i bought it i did all of the following to insure a long and pleasurable driving experience. I now have 138,000 miles and the only maintenance has been fluids, tires and battery.
1. Remove the cam covers and make sure that the tensioners have been updated. If they haven't do a search for "zip tie method". That is the method I used and was pleased with the outcome. While the covers are off thoroughly clean the wire mesh beneath the part load breather on the left cover and the full load breather on the right cover.
2. Replace the plastic thermostat tower with the aluminum model. When i did mine I removed the intake manifold and replaced the 2 hoses in the engine valley. If they rupture you will not only have to replace the hoses but the water can short out the Knock Sensors and you will end up having to change them.
3. While I had the plastic tower out I install a new hose and the plastic pipe connected to the tower.
4. With the pipe, hoses and tower out of the way there is plenty of room to remove and replace the water pump. Mine wasn't a plastic model but since I was already there a new pump with new seals and bearings was a no brainer.
5. Do some internet parts searches and check with the forum sponsors Jagbits and SNG Barratt and some of the others. Gather up the parts in advance and the repairs go smoothly.
You can PM me if you have more questions about the individual procedures.
