Default Problem with going into Drive

I'm brand new to owning a Jaguar (bought it Sat.) and brand new to this forum.

When I go to drive from park I have to rev it up a little and it goes into drive with a loud thunk. The only time it does this is from Park. The transmission warning light is also on.

I bought the car knowing it might need a new transmission, which is why I only paid 2700 for it. The rest of the car is in mint condition. I found a rebuilt transmission 70 miles from my house for 1000.00. My husband is a master mechanic and would be the one removing and installing mine.

Could this be something other than the transmission? Would it be worth my while to get a quote on rebuilding my tranny?

It's a 1998 XJ8L

It's also not downshifting when you accelerate to pass a car for example

Default

Could be low on fluid. I had a customer car (1998 VDP) that an indy shop and the dealer wanted to replace the gearbox. I found the trans fluid level low and a pinhole in one of the cooler lines.

I fixed the line and topped up the gearbox, no more slipping and default to limp home mode.
