When you say boot lock doesn't work, do you mean the key won't turn? That's a fairly common problem and just requires freeing the lock.

Squirt some light oil or solvent in the slot and work the key gently.

I already put some WD40 to the lock but seems that this lock is broken. Key is turning maybe 45 degrees, not 90

If you have the black headed key then you need to put it into the ignition to reset the valet mode.

When you put your black key in the ignition it automatically disables Valet mode.

On my car the valet mode will not disable until I either use the key in the boot lock or open boot with remote.

I think you need to keep working the lock, but I'm sure you're worried you will break the key.

The boot lights need to come ON for the Valet mode to be disabled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to use the key a few times a year to make sure the lock remains FREE!!

The expert has spoken. Bob may not please everyone with his posts, but he has years of experience and does not guess or bs. Many members of the forum, like myself, express opinions based on limited experience or evaluation of posts of others, but he has been working on these cars longer than most members have been driving.

I enjoy and look forward to his post. I find them very imformative. I hope he continues to post for years to come and I appreciate his taking time out of his day to share with us his knowledge. He could just spend his days eating popcorn.

This forum is a LIBRARY!!!! There thousands of references to all sorts of problems and fixes. You don't ask the librarian questions on things you are researching, you go to the books on the shelves!!!

The same questions get asked over and over................ Sometimes (ad nauseam) the same answers are posted.

I get it that most people would rather get a question answered than to research the issue (human nature) but the horse is dead (stop beating it, it's not going to get up!) on so many problems. Jaguar issued thousands of TSBs for common faults and I read everyone of them when they were released so I could make money and not waste time asking questions when the answer was already provided.

I uploaded all that I had acquired up to 2006 when I retired from the dealer. I sorted them in categories. Gus asked if he could post them on his website so they are there also.

I admit being grumpier in my old age but after a few hundred replies on the same subject, it seems like nobody pays attention.

I'm done with my rant and I feel better now (until the next time).

Thanks Bob, you are right.

Since acquiring my XJ8, I have spent hours reading on problem after problem I will hopefully never ever experience on my car.
Still, it all adds to the X308 experience, and gives a perfect base for at least the basic understanding of the car, its mechanics, and its possible problems.

And I do agree that most solutions are within this great forum, although I must admit that lots of threads are unfortunately open-ended.
It is also not always clear who to believe, to many crap is thrown around sometimes .

So opening a new thread, and ask for some confirmations on the research one has done will keep popping up on this forum.
At least I will do, as up to date advise or confirmations from guys like you (Motocarman), Addictedtoboost, Harvest14, Greverrr, Jhartz, and many many more, is just that added value on making decisions.

Therefore following also this thread with interest.

Sorry for asking. But like I said I bought this Jag and boot lock is broken. Like I understand, I must open the boot somehow to switch off this valet mode?
P.S motorcarman I made a research here and google. But no luck, valet mode is still on.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, Advanced Search lets you use keywords AND specify a forum member name. Choose motorcarman or one of the other techs and you often get a short list of useful fixes before even posting a new thread

If your key is defiantly not working on your boot lock then in all probability you'll have to drill a hole in a specific place behind the rear number plate to access the boot lock rod and manually activate it to open your boot. There are guides on this subject on the forum, you'll have to use the search to find them.

Peerak, u mentioned before you can turn the key 45 degrees. I can confirm it needs a full 90 degrees, and u start to feel pressure only after 45 degrees. You might want to drenge it in WD40 and try to work it carefully loose. There are several other members who went through the same. Take ur time.

I think you dont have to drill a hole, but can use one of the existing holes behind the plate. Use the search engine indeed .

LOL I knew it was something like that, I can't remember everything off the top of my head!

Glad you got it sorted, get the lock off and greased! It's not a difficult job to get off.

On my car the valet mode will not disable until I use the key in the boot lock - NOTHING else will turn off that mode - not with the key in the ignition, and none of the electronic boot-opening options (remote fob, trunk lid or button left of the steering wheel) operate when in valet mode.

FYI, if you only have a green key, you can shave down the sides of the first 2-3 millimeters of the key to make it work like a black key.
