Default programming a TCM module for a x308 XJR

is this something I can do myself or does a dealer have to do this? does autologic provide a DIY tool?

Think if you can do it, it will probably only be doable with the jaguar tool. However I am not aware of any new programs for the TCM, nor that you are able to programm it with the Jaguar tool. What is the reason that why you want do it?

my car is ocassionally slamming from 2 to 3 and it all started after I had the battery disconnected for about 8 hours...the slamming does not occur when I am on S mode...so it seems like a confused tcm issue....no other issues with the tranny at all ...no lights or warning messages

Have you done one of those hard resets that seems to cure gremlins? the neg taken off and held onto the pos post for 10 seconds? The idea is to drain all residual electricity from capacitors, a bit like resetting the bios in a computer. This gets the car back to "learning mode", it could well be in this state right now. If it doesn't calm down after a few driving cycles, give it the re-boot.

I had two different dealer service department's tell me that they could not reflash the TCM. Mine had a downshift fault that would not release the torque converter lockup. Wreaking yard used unit for $100 fixed it. Probably cheaper than a dealer reflash even if they could do it.

hey test point - so did the wrecking yard just put in a used tcm module? sounds like that might be the trick if the hard reset doesn't work...

Just be sure that you get the matching part number to yours, including the /xxx extension. Mine was just plug and play, no programming required. You will have to install it yourself but that is little more difficult than replacing a headlight bulb.

The ZF 5hp24 has, I think, six run programs but does not really 'learn' anything. The TCM reads all the inputs from the various sensors and selects the software defined shifting program.

There is a complete technical reference on the transmission and TCM operation in the XK8/R forum FAQ Sticky.

Don't be shocked by the first quotes on used parts. Price is what you are willing to pay and not a penny more. The dealer price at the time I had a problem was $2050. First quote from a wreaking yard was $800. Bought a working unit for less than $100 shipped.

So where did you get the TCM for $100?
And can you confirm the process to perform a "hard reset"?
I have ongoing issues with the gear hunting (trans rebuilt & TCM reflashed several times).
And I seem to start out in 2nd gear a lot unless I come to a complete stop for at least a few seconds, like it can't keep up with my stop & go driving.

Thanks.

Google 'used auto parts' and you will find several salvage yard services that will take your parts request and transmit it to hundreds of yards. The individual yards will then offer parts and prices via email.

Three notes; a couple will require a small payment to be refunded, that is not necessary, move on to another service. Many replies are automated to say they have your part when they haven't even checked, wastes your time and theirs. Price is negotiable ! ! ! !

I notice that Advance AP now has a used parts service. Bet they are just using the same on line services that you can access. I got my TCM from a yard in RI but that was just because they had it and met my price.

i did the hard reset and it seemed to solve the problem of my transmission shifting harsh from 2 to 3...but now it is back...it is coming back slowly so i am convinced it is related to the adaptation of the tranny...anyone know the best way to set this after a hard reset on a x308 XJR?

Have you checked the fluid level? You can actually flash the TCM, but it's only done with the IDS tool from Jaguar, and the strange thing is our R boxes aren't listed. My friend who works for Jaguar attempted a gearbox re-flash to the latest firmware didn't bother as we couldn't decide on which gearbox was listed to do the job.

no I have not checked the fluid...having my mechanic change the fluid worries me so I think I might avoid that....I am planning to do another hard reset to see if the issue goes away...I am convinced it will...I am hoping to find out the best way to break the TCM in before I do it

The two most common problems with the MB box -- low fluid and a leaking electrical connection. The "o" rings on the plug leak fluid internally (to the harness) -- this can cause various shifting problems as well as a slight drop in fluid. Yo may not see any fluid.

At the first sign of any strange behavior you need to check the fluid and then the connection.

hey yeldogt - i noticed the past owner had the switch replaced...i need to order the dipstick to check the fluid...i wish i could find something like the attached ECM adaptation for the TCM adaptation as i am pretty convinced that is the problem...the issue i am having goes away after a hard reset but seems to come back within 5000 miles...

I wonder if this would work for a x308 XJR TCMs adaptation?
http://www.justanswer.com/uploads/cr...00145NAS11.pdf

I am going to try it...obviously I don't have an IDS but if I do a hard reset and then drive the way they mention maybe that will take care of my problem

That only applies to to the 6 spped ZF not the Mercedes 5 speed. The adaptations on the Mercedes require a hard reset & then just go drive the car hard for a while.

Where is the Trans CM located? I have 2003 VDP.

Thanks
