OK.... I'm new the the board and want to say, thank you in advance for the help.
I'm actually getting ready to go look at a 2000 XJ8 which the owner says needs a motor but said that it will start and run. He doesn't seem very mechanically inclined on the phone and I just want to have a leg up when I get there to know what to look for. I'm actually waiting for him to call me back so that I can get a little more detailed infor on the engine problem but as of now, this is where I am at.
For some reason I can't open any of the links in the FAQs or stickies to see what some of the known problems are with these cars (moderator has me locked out and says I don't have permission, kinda lame if you ask me, but oh well, life goes on)
Now... Down to business, What can I expect.
Can the rattle from chain tensioners be bad enough to cause someone to think that the engine is about gone?
Is engine failure a common problem?
What exactly should I check/ look at to diagnose what the problem may be?
I have tools, what should I bring with me?
Oh... If I'm not mistaken, Ford actually owned Jaguar in 2000, So can parts be obtained cheaper now and what motor is in the XJ8L?
If there is anything else that I need to know, please keep filing in the blanks. While I wait for the respones, I will be trolling the search function myself but time is of the essense because I really want to look at this car in the daylight and hopefully drag it home tonight.
Thanx again guys
Steve

>>If the tensioers have jumped timing, it can bend valves- It might have jumped but not yet jumped enough to crash.
Is engine failure a common problem?
>> Two known engine weak points, the tensioners and Nikasil
What exactly should I check/ look at to diagnose what the problem may be?
>> If you can run a compression or leakdown test, it would be valuable.
I have tools, what should I bring with me?

>> Heh, heh-you might think so, but the parts for the Jag are expensive and not too many are common to the Ford. The 4.0 liter overhead cam engiine is unique to Jaguar although the Lincoln 3.9 is SIMILIAR.

>> The Nikasil engine is not easily rebuilt. Nikasil liners mean the only practical way to rebore is to install steel sleeves. Pistons, rings, bearings, cranks and so on rarely fail, but are VERY expensive and not readily available. My opinion- If the engine is shot the car has 125,000 miles or so, the max price I would spend is $1,500 or so. A used engine is about $2,000 to $2,400 ans about 20 or 25 hours for the average shadetree to put in the first time.
