Default radiator cooling fans

My wife drives a '99 XJR and I recently noticed the electric fans continue running for a minute or two after the car is shut off. Can someone tell me if this is normal - I don't remember this occurring in the past? Thanks.

That is not unique nor abnormal as long as they run for only a minute or less. Heat soak of the heads/coolant/temp sensor.

Mine never ran after shut down until 2 weeks ago. I ended up needing a T-stat. Now they never run after shut off as before. If the run time keeps increasing then check the cooling system.

Mine has never run on after shutting down; but many others have. If you have a good OBDII reader, plug it in while it is running and observe the engine temp. If more than 205* or so with the fans running (and AC on) you may need to renew the TST, the coolant, and check the drive belt. Both fans should be running if it is still that hot.

Is it the original water pump?

I have had BMWs and Hondas that would run on for a minute -- it was considered normal: don't think so for these cars. Note well: (nb if you are into Latin) With 3 Land rovers and 3 Jags, I have never had an AJ 8 cylinder engine run on.

My car runs at 195 F and the fans come on for about 10-15 sec. after shutdown.

I guess Bob breaks the tie and it's not normal. Since first posting, the fans kept running on longer - got to the point I had to disconnect the battery after 5 minutes or so. Temp gauge always read normal until today when it spiked and the indicator light came on for about 20 seconds. Just as I was pulling over the light went out and the gauge dropped to normal. Checked the coolant level after the engine cooled and it was normal. Will replace the thermostat this weekend and refill and bleed. I'm assuming this simply involves bringing the engine up to operating temp and running with the pressure cap off? Thanks everyone for your feedback - it's appreciated.

For an effective one shot bleeding method on a XJR see the following post:

You might want to replace the water pump, or at least remove it for inspection.

Replaced the thermostat ($20 from NAPA here in the U.S. is the OEM part) and used the bleed procedure posted by plums. No more temp issues and no more fans running with the ignition off. Thanks again everyone.
