pirat, could you please tell me the model and year car that we are dealing with. That will help out a lot of us as we can then use the drawings to help narrow down where the problem may lie. Otherwise, we are giving a lot of generalizations and it makes it more difficult for you to interpret and take action.

First fuse to check is F9 10A in the LH heelboard fuse box which is unswitched live to radio cassette unit.
next one to check is F3 5A in the trunk fuse box which is the ignition switch supply to the radio cassette unit.
Try this first and post back.
What is the red light you are referring to?
Make sure your new battery is fully charged also.
