Default RE: Random Misfire

Hi

I'm Playfone, new to the forum. Need some help with engine problems.

Just took my fathers 1999 XJ8 out of storage. Been sitting for a few years. Put in new battery, car started, but very bad misfire in all cyl.

Codes confirmed, P0301-2-3 etc. showed misfires. No other codes. At any given time it sounds like 4 cyl are running. Will keep idle but that's about it. Also, there is a tinny metal sound top end of engine in rear. Not a heavy metal, and not all the time. Almost like a clang sound.

Have not done a Hard Reboot yet. But will to resolve window issues.

Where should I start with the engine.
Thanks

Pull covers & check your timing tensioners(may be your "clang" sound) ASAP or there could be massive damage done, there are plenty of threads here to search. Godspeed.

+1 secondary tensioner (or chain) has failed on right bank causing mistiming.

I would not start the engine until this was checked. Check the archives for why if you don't have a clear picture already!
