Reading codes

Reading codes
I am having a few issues with my 98 XJ8 and it may be the throttle body. Unfortunately this car has already had the upgrade. The dealer wants me to bring in the car to check the codes on the computer. I am wondering if this is something a mildly mechanical person can accomplish without taking it to the dealer or investing in specialized equipment.
Thank you in advance for your feedback.

nahidik, if you look around, you can find your own code reader for around $60. It is a no thrills version, but if all that you are after is the codes, that unit will do it. You can check places like your local auto parts store, Northern Tool, Harbor Freight, etc. They all carry the cheaper code readers.
As for being able to read codes, can you plug in a single plug? That is about all that there is to it. You have the car off, you look under the steering wheel and find the large plug, plug the reader into the jack, turn the car to the RUN position (motor can be running or not). From there, the reader does everything else.
