Rear A/C

Rear A/C
I have a 2000 VDP the rear A/C vents run very very weak even when the fan is on high! you can barely feel any air coming out of the vents. Is this normal? or do i have a malfunction somewhere? If i put the vents up front in the closed position thats the only time you would be able to tell the A/C is on in the rear. Other then that the A/C seems to be working fine, I just feel bad when i have people in the back seat.
Is it normal to have weak A/C in the rear? My brother has a 2005 300C and his rear A/C blows just as hard as the front! help! thanks in advance

My '00 XJR is the same. Maybe others will chime in and give us more data points. When I've had the centre console in pieces for various reasons in the past I've noticed the feeds into the rear air vents are very very narrow, so maybe by design you're never going to be able to get a lot of air out of them.
I wonder if setting the air flow selector to the floor would help cool the back down as there are floor vents under the front seats facing backwards which look a lot bigger than the face vents. I'll try an experiment on the way home and report back.
The best cars I've seen for rear ventilation are Volvos (S80 I think) which have air vents in the pillars which you can direct straight into your face, enough to give you brain freeze.

Well, I tried setting the flow to floor and sitting in the back but the vents under the front seats that point backwards didn't do anything, so I don't even know if they are supposed to be vents or not.
The best way I've found to cool the people in the back is have the middle vents on either side of the clock set so they are pointing straight back (and not angled at the front passenger and driver) and have the blower on higher than you would normally when you were only in the car yourself.
I've had a few passengers comment that they thought the A/C in the Jag was "very good" so I guess it's all relative. For sure the front may cool down a little faster than the back but once the A/C has moved the air around the cabin a few times it's pretty even. Personally I don't like having air blowing in my face anyway as I get a headache.

Owning a 10-year old car I would like to bring it up to date as much as possible while still keeping the sexy XJ8 body!. Nice A/C, H.I.D lights, Power fold mirrors, in dash GPS, Ipod dock. These are things I would like to do throughout owning the Jag.
What else can you guys think of to bring our "old mans" car more up to date?
Anyone know what kind of custom work could be done to the A/C, I want my Jag to be colder then a freezer! (live in a desert)

Yes, I guess it is all relative. My '99 Black on Black gets VERY hot here in the Summer (99-110 Degrees), but Cools down quickly, back seat and all. I also aim the center vents to the back until it's cooled down as I do like the air in my face.
The back vents are only good for maintaining the temp after the front vents have cooled the cabin down.

Further note, have had 3 x308 and 1 x300 in the family, all A/C rear vents are poor. I find it best to channel all the air from the center vents by the clock to the back seat as well.

Everything has been done there except updating the A/C. A tech on here has retrofitted HID lights should be able to find a how to by an advanced search, In england our cars have power fold mirrors so you can find a kit and install it (I think it was around $600 tho) perform a search here or try other jaguar xj8 forums, link here for indash gps (pics links are broken but you can try emailing the poster and find out more) or maybe you can try fitting the xk8 color navigation kit (my 03 xjr has factory nav

If you're determined to improve the rear A/C flow, and if you don't mind losing some of the center console storage space, you could add a small, squirrel cage blower in the console, with some interesting duct mods, to assist in getting more air flow through that skinny duct that exists under the console storage bin. I can see how it could be done... not interested in doing it myself, lol.
