Default Rear view Mirror

My mom's vdp RVM has darkened making it very hard to see.

Is it trash? Whats the best option thats cheap?

This had happened on another car of mine and something happened inside where the chemicals mixed that help with the dimming. Only fix was a replacement. Sorry.

Search the forum for 'mirror' - there are many posts. The XJ mirror fails with age and replacements are available for under $100 - outlined is the posts. Caution - as the failure progresses, the mirror can drip oily liquid onto your shift console veneer, damaging it.

How hard is it to replace the mirror?

Easy. One screw under the glasses holder in the roof console, lower console, disconnect the connectors coming from the mirror under the console assembly, spray some silicone lube or wd40 into where the mirror attaches, wiggle it a bit and push down, while remaining on the plain of the glass, and it should pop right off (spring loaded). Search the forum for specifics of where to send it, but it is domestic in the USA. Cost $95, including shipping back. You have to pick up shipping to the rebuild facility.

Is the screw on the 1998 a torx?
