Default Rear view mirror loosening, comes off

1999 XJ-8 Just recently, the rear view mirror comes off at times and seems to be wobbly. I have a sunshade fit for the car that I put on when the car is in the sun and everytime I use it the mirror falls off. I have had the mirror redone about 3 years ago and have not had problems until now. Thought about putting some tape on the metal tab that attaches to the windshield. Anyone have a better answer? Thanks.

Mine was similarly loose and falling off, I used pliers to slightly tweak the rails that slide the mirror onto the windshield clip. It's nice and solid now.

Hello rsgensburg,

You can get a Rearview Mirror Adhesive kit from most auto part stores. The one I know that works really well is made by Permatex, (This is for use on Metal Tabs only, which by the sounds of it is what you have) I got this from NAPA.
Make sure you read and follow the instructions to the T or it wont work.
Hope this helps,
knobby

I was recently having the same issue after taking my mirror off to replace the glass. I tried bending the clips that slide onto the mount inwards and it didn't do much.

I had much better luck when I took the retainer out of the mirror stem, just take the one bolt out, and bend the four tangs at each corner outwards more, so that it's a tighter fit when putting it back into the mirror stem. It's still a bit wobbly, but much better than before.

If I use the adhesive, will I be able to get it back off?

I don't really understand the discussion, if the whole mirror with its bracket is loose from the window itself (or coming loose), then you will need the suggested special adhesive kit.

If the mirror is a bit loose on the bracket itself (and the bracket is tightly fixed to the window), then all you have to do is carefully take the mirror off the bracket (can be a pain in the ***, but in your case will be easy), and, as suggested, slightly bend the taps a bit.
Once you got the mirror off, and see how they mate, you will know what to do.

They came original as a rather tight fit, hard to remove.
Best to get it right in one time, ppl. broke their window removing the mirror.
...and please no tape .

Eric
