I’ve been looking at upgrading the speakers as well and would like to go the component way. I took the drivers door card off yesterday to find that the speakers, or at least the drivers, have already been swapped for really poor cheap 6.5’s with separate tweeters.
One thing I couldn’t see is where the factory crossover/joint is. There is just two sets of cables coming out of some flexible conduit at the bottom of the door. If I go the component route then I’ll surely have to find this ‘joint’ to fit the new crossovers won’t I?
I have the standard, non premium system for reference.
I attached the pdf from that, where in it you'll find...
I have the full wiring diagram printed out but i can’t see where these splices are for the speakers. If I am to fit component speakers then I will need to find this to fit the new crossovers.
Mine is premium and I have a 3rd party head unit and ran all my wiring to the trunk and spliced it. That's where the CD changer, AMP and Nav unit was and fed back out to the front. Yours I would assume (rough word), simply runs to the umbilical connector on the back of your head unit.
